Ozone effects on photosynthesis of ornamental species suitable for urban green spaces of China

Abstract: a b s t r a c tUrban green spaces (UGS) offer several ecosystemical benefits to the urban environment. However, these advantages may be weakened by alterations of plants photophysiological mechanisms due to increasing tropospheric ozone (O 3 ) concentrations, a serious problem for China. To evaluate their utilization in UGS, we selected three widely-used urban plant species (smoke tree, Cotinus coggygria Scop.; marigold, Tagetes erecta Linn.; rose, Rosa chinensis Jacp.) to investigate their biometric and photo… Show more

“…These parameters were decreased with As treatment in P. cretica and S. oleracea shoots ( Figure 3 ). Furthermore, the F v /F m of As-treated plants below 0.8 confirmed the plants’ response to stress [ 68 ]. A similar effect was observed on chlorophyll fluorescence among different plant species [ 24 , 37 , 38 , 52 , 55 , 58 ].…”

“…Today, drought is the major factor limiting plant performance, and revealing the mechanisms that enable plants to survive or acclimatize to such conditions is crucial ( Claeys and Inzé, 2013 ). On the other hand, O 3 is by far the most phytotoxic air pollutant with deleterious effects on growth and productivity ( Vainonen and Kangasjärvi, 2015 ; Cotrozzi et al, 2016a ; Yang et al, 2016 ). Both drought and O 3 are co-occurring, increasing stressors in future climate change scenarios ( Bates et al, 2008 ).…”
