Ozone air levels adjacent to a dental ozone gas delivery system

Abstract: Ozone application cycles with displacements showed significantly higher leakage levels than continuous complete cycles. The largest ozone delivery cups showed the highest leakage values. A change in background levels was seen with similar change in adjacent ozone levels. The overall measured ozone leakage values were low after normally functioning delivery cycles and after repeated displacements. The delivery system can be considered safe.

“…Ozone gas was distributed to the tooth surfaces through disposable silicone cups provided by the manufacturer and assured a perfect seal to prevent any ozone leakage. The healOzone X4 machine only supplies ozone once the cup provides an absolute seal; this element allows the machine to be safely employed to humans 17 , 31 . Subsequently, application of 38% H 2 O 2 gel (BMS white 38%; BMS Dental) followed for 20 minutes.…”

“…In the present audit gaseous ozone was used. The choice of gaseous ozone was based on the ozone generator cur- rently available and in use by the authors, it has been approved for use in the EU and room contamination and staff and patient exposure can be significantly reduced by adherence to safety measures including application of suction [18,22]. Attention to safety is important with ozone.…”

“…To make sure that the observed therapeutic effect was that of ozone patients were also instructed not to use any of the available antimicrobials after the treatment with ozone. It is known that agents like chlorhexidine are being used as part of the chemo-mechanical treatment approach of chronic periodontitis and can significantly reduce the depth of deep and medium-deep pockets [22]. Patients were given oral hygiene instructions and were asked to keep their oral hygiene daily diary.…”
