OXYUROIDS OF PALEARCTIC TESTUDINIDAE—NEW DEFINITION FORALAEURISSeurat, 1918 (NEMATODA: PHARYNGODONIDAE) AND REDESCRIPTION OFALAEURIS NUMIDICA(Seurat, 1918)

Abstract: The generic diagnosis of Alaeuris is emended based on the study and redescription of Alaeuris numidica from the cecum of Testudo graeca collected in Settat, Morocco and of Testudo hermanni collected in Catalonia, Spain. Scanning electron microscopy studies revealed that the papillae previously described as adanal are simple lobes because of the lack of terminal nerves, and that both preanal and postanal papillae are pedunculate. These new findings allowed us to emend the diagnosis of the genus and the species.… Show more

“…Secondly, all collected adult oxyurids were washed in distilled water and subsequently stored in 70% ethanol. Thirdly, oxyurids were cleared in Amann lactophenol solution and subsequently identified to the species level following several keys (Petter, 1966; Bouamer & Morand, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2003a, 2003b, 2006; Bouamer, Morand & Bourgat, 2001a, 2001b; Bouamer, Morand & Kara, 2003). The number of Oxyuridae eggs and larvae present in the feces were not considered in this study because it was not possible to identify these immature stages to the species level (Traversa et al, 2005).…”

“…Three selected representative structures (spicule, tail, oesophagus) of all the preserved nematodes were measured by a photomicroscopy system (Leica EZ Camera 2.4.1) associated with specific morphometry software (LAS EZ 2.1.0). This information was compared to the morphological and morphometrical data reported in the scientific literature, which was carried out by two experts in Parasitology to maximise the objectivity of identification based on morphological keys (Bouamer et al, , 2001Bouamer and Morand, 2005, 2003Petter, 1966).…”
