RESUMO.-ȑConcentrações ϐisiológicas plasmáticas de ocitocina pré e pós-puberal em gatos machos (Felis silvestris catus).]A ocitocina é um hormônio secretado pela neurohipóϐise através da estimulação dos neurônios dos núcleos supraópticos e paraventriculares do hipotálamo. Com o intuito de determinar as concentrações ϐisiológicas de ocitocina em gatos domésticos foram coletadas amostras de sangue de 15 animais (Felis silvestris catus) machos, nos períodos pré e pós puberdade (quarto e oitavo mês de vida), sendo utilizada a técnica de radioimunoensaio para tal determinação. Na primeira dosagem a concentração mé-dia foi de 2,54±0,24 (μg/dL), e na segunda 2,53±0,28 (μg/ Pre-and post-puberty physiological plasma oxytocin concentrations in male domestic cats (Felis silvestris catus) The hormone oxytocin is released by the neuropituitary gland through stimulation of the neurons of the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei of the hypothalamus. In order to determine the physiological concentrations of this hormone in domestic cats, blood samples were collected from 15 male animals (Felis silvestris catus) during the pre-and post-puberty periods (at four and eight months of age, respectively). Oxytocin determination was accomplished by radioimmunoassay. The average oxytocin concentrations measured in the preand post-puberty periods were 2.54±0.24 (μg/dL) and 2.53±0.28 (μg/dL), respectively, and there were no statistical differences between these measurements. Because there are few literature on the analysis of this hormone, especially in the case of male Felis silvestris catus, more studies on the inϐluence of oxytocin on the physiology and reproduction of this species should be conducted under maintenance and situations of stress (such as transportation), and other routine events.

In mares, prostaglandin F 2α (PGF 2α ) secreted from the endometrium is a major luteolysin. some domestic animals have an autoamplification system in which PGF 2α can stimulate its own production. here, we investigated whether this is also the case in mares. In an in vivo study, mares at the mid-luteal phase (days 6-8 of estrous cycle) were injected i.m. with cloprostenol (250 µg) and blood samples were collected at fixed intervals until 72 h after treatment. Progesterone (P 4 ) concentrations started decreasing 45 min after the injection and continued to decrease up to 24 h (P < 0.05). In turn, 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-PGF 2α (PGFM) metabolite started to increase 4h after an injection and continued to increase up to 72 h (P < 0.05). PGF receptor (PTGFR) mRNa expression in the endometrium was significantly higher in the late luteal phase than in the early and regressed luteal phases (P < 0.05). In vitro, PGF 2α significantly stimulated (P < 0.05) PGF 2α production by endometrial tissues and endometrial epithelial and stromal cells and significantly increased (P < 0.05) the mRNa expression of prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase-2 (PTGS2), an enzyme involved in PGF 2α synthesis in endometrial cell. These findings strongly suggest the existence of an endometrial PGF 2α auto-amplification system in mares.

Embryonic mortality in cattle is the death of the conceptus before Day 42 of pregnancy. Estimates of embryonic mortality varied greatly, ranging from 10 to 40% in first-service cattle to 65% in repeat-breeder cows. This paper reviews endogenous causes of embryonic mortality, including chromosomal abnormalities, inadequate corpus luteum function and the influence of follicular development on fertility. External causes of embryonic mortality, including heat stress and nutrition, are also reviewed; these factors act by modifying the follicular environment (thereby affecting oocyte quality) or by creating a hostile uterine environment. Strategies to reduce embryonic mortality, including good management practices and supplementation with progesterone or interferon-tau, are discussed. From a practical perspective, improved knowledge of the causes of embryonic mortality and regulation of follicular growth and corpus luteum function should result in the development of improved, cost-effective hormonal regimes that effectively synchronize estrus and ovulation and reduce embryonic mortality, thereby benefiting the cattle industry.Key words: Cattle, reproduction, fertility, embryo development, embryo mortality Bilodeau-Goeseels, S. et Kastelic, J. L'article que voiçi examine les causes endogènes de la mortalité embryonnaire incluant les anomalies chromosomales, le fonctionnement inadéquat du corpus luteum ainsi que l'influence du développement folliculaire sur la fertilité. Des causes externes telles que le stress thermique et la nutrition sont aussi passées en revue; ces facteurs agissent en modifiant l'environnement folliculaire ce qui conduit à une diminution de la qualité de l'ovocyte; ou en créant un environnement utérin hostile pour l'embryon. Des stratégies pour réduire la mortalité embryonnaire telles que la bonne gestion et la supplémentation avec de la progestérone ou de l'interféron-tau sont aussi discutées. Du point de vue pratique, l'augmentation des connaissances sur les causes de la mortalité embryonnaire ainsi que sur la régulation de la croissance folliculaire et du fonctionnement du corpus luteum permettra le développement de régimes hormonaux améliorés et économiques produisant des hauts niveaux de synchronization de l'estrus et/ou de l'ovulation et qui réduiront la mortalité embryonnaire, ce don't bénéficieront les industries laitières et bovines.
