Abstract: Inhibition of I(Ca(T)) by OT in decidual cells obtained during labor may signify important functional remodeling of uterine signaling during this period.

“…However, corroborating the modulatory effect of beta-estradiol exerted on voltage-gated calcium channels and on estrogen receptors, we might consider that there is an interplay between these key players that involves the activation of calcium signaling pathways. Other hormones (e.g., progesterone, oxytocin) have also been described to block voltage-gated calcium channels [ 62 , 63 , 64 ], and we might suppose a similar inhibition in TCs human myometrial preparations, but our study was focused only on estrogen effects.…”

“…These cells have the characteristics of myofibroblasts, including contractile activity [60], and thus may influence normal or abnormal delivery of the foetus. Isolated stromal cells exhibit inward Ca 2+ current that is predominantly T-type [61] as judged by a high sensitivity to Ni 2+ , but not to nifedipine, that furthermore is attenuated by oxytocin. In addition, oxytocin reduced the inward current, but the effect was greater in cells from women in labour, compared to those obtained at Caesarean section.…”

“…Placental OXT induces uterine contractions by directly affecting the myometrium as well as indirectly by increasing the production of prostaglandins, especially prostaglandin F2 α (PGF2 α), by the decidua, which upregulates OXTR expression and formation of gap junctions that also promote contractions [50]. OXT production and OXTR expression by decidual cells seem to be particularly important during labor, as defended in previous works [51,52]. The pathogenic implications of OXT and OXTR overexpression in FE-PW must be deeply studied.…”
