Oxytocin effects on experimental skin wound healing

Abstract: Objective: Oxytocin (OXY) has significant effects on mammalian behavior. Next to its role in lactation and social interactions, it is described to support better wound healing as well. However, direct OXY effects on wound healing and the regeneration of the microvascular network are still not clarified. We therefore examined the effects of OXY and an OXY receptor antagonist [atosiban (ATO)] on skin wound healing, focusing on epithelialization and neovascularization. Methods: Skin wound healing has been assesse… Show more

“…Intranasal administration of oxytocin reduces smoking craving ( 144 ) and thus may reduce the susceptibility to COVID-19. In addition, oxytocin can accelerate wound healing such as the lesions of skin ( 145 ), stomach ( 146 ), and intestine ( 147 ), and thus can strengthen the barrier against viral invasion. As a whole, oxytocin potentially suppresses the activation of S protein and viral entry into ACE2-positive cells.…”

“…Experimental Procedures DSC modification: Mice were anesthetized by an intraperitoneal injection of ketamine/xylazine (90/25 mg/kg bw) and a heating pad (37.8°C). Microsurgery for DSC implantation has been described in detail [65][66][67][68]. The significant change in the proposed model is the preparation of a standardized full-thickness defect using a 2-mm skin biopsy punch.…”

“…Oxytocin has a preventive impact on tissue damage owing to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, but its effect on wound healing is not restricted to that. The potential of oxytocin, by means of its anti-apoptotic and angiogenic properties, optimizes the activity of mesenchymal stem cells to improve tissue healing in rats (155)(156)(157)(158). Oxytocin has been demonstrated to influence plasma levels of both insulin growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and growth hormone (GH), which contributes to its immune-modulatory and regenerative effects (155).…”
