Oxygen Conservation Methods With Automated Titration

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Oxygen titration is recommended to avoid hyperoxemia and hypoxemia. Automated titration, as well as the S pO 2 target, may have an impact on oxygen utilization, with potential logistical effects in emergency and military transportation. We sought to assess the oxygen flow required for different S pO 2 targets in spontaneously breathing subjects, and to evaluate individualized automated oxygen titration to maintain stable oxygenation in subjects with COPD and healthy subjects with induced hypoxemia.… Show more

“…The findings of our study are in line with previous studies testing the efficacy of closed-loop oxygen control in preterm infants ( 13 34 ) and adults ( 16 , 35 44 ) receiving HFNO for hypoxemia of various causes. In all those studies, closed-loop oxygen control outperformed healthcare workers performing manual oxygen titrations with respect to the percentage of time spent in target SpO 2 ranges and to the time spent in potentially dangerous SpO 2 zones ( 13 44 ).…”

“…This decrease in FiO 2 use and OI may represent a more efficient use of therapeutic oxygen. A similar decrease was also noted by Bourassa et al with their automated FiO 2 titration device ( 17 ). Considering the surge in demand for mechanical ventilation and the possible scarcity of oxygen gas supply for these patients during pandemics, closed-loop FiO 2 control may contribute to a more sparing use of this therapeutic agent ( 18 20 ).…”

“…[43][44][45] Very little attention has been paid to patients. 3,9,30,46,47 To the authors' knowledge, few studies have investigated the integration of medical devices in PPE 3,12,[47][48][49] for quicker clinical responses. 3,12 Regardless of the wearer, PPE does not allow for easy access to monitor vital signs or initiate medical interventions such as respiratory and hemodynamic management.…”
