Oxone®-Mediated TEMPO-Oxidized Cellulose Nanomaterials form I and form II

Abstract: The 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-oxyl (TEMPO) oxidation of cellulose, when mediated with Oxone® (KHSO5), can be performed simply and under mild conditions. Furthermore, the products of the reaction can be isolated into two major components: Oxone®-mediated TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanomaterials Form I and Form II (OTO-CNM Form I and Form II). This study focuses on the characterization of the properties of OTO-CNMs. Nanoparticle-sized cellulose fibers of 5 and 16 nm, respectively, were confirmed through elect… Show more

“…A reduction in peaks at 896 cm −1 and 986 cm −1 was observed for paper produced from TMF. Notably, TEMPO-oxidized cellulose is distinguished from other samples by the shift and merging of stretching at 1598 cm −1 , owing to the presence of the C=O moiety of carboxylate groups on fibrils [37][38][39]. The carboxylate band in the spectrum of 100% TMF sheets masked the OH bending of adsorbed water at 1635-1638 cm −1 [40].…”

“…Utilizing the procedure from Moore et al, OTO-CNMs Form I and Form II were synthesized and used in conjunction with cellulose triacetate (CTA) from Acros Organics (Fair Lawn, NJ, USA), N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) from VWR (Radnor, PA, USA), and deionized water to create novel membranes for filtration [21]. The proteins used for ultrafiltration and dialysis characterization were bovine serum albumin (BSA), lysozyme, and urea supplied from VWR.…”

“…Form I is partially oxidized, and Form II is fully oxidized. They were both found to have a novel crystalline structure [21]. Neither Form I or Form II has been tested within polymer-based filtration studies.…”

“…TEMPO oxidized cellulose contains carboxylate groups which make the material more hydrophilic, thereby improving solubility. The TEMPO oxidation process has been explored previously [25][26][27][28] . Although TEMPO oxidized cellulose produces materials that are present in crystalline nanofibrils that form larger fibrous structures in the native form, modifying these biopolymers via dissolution and precipitation is possible 29 .…”
