“…Perinatal alterations of OT can also have life-long lasting effects on the development of social behaviors [124]. Within the perinatal period, various processes, like planned caesarean section, labor induced by synthetic OT or interrupted with oxytocinergic antagonists, can also alter the OT balance in the newborns, even though the implications and medium/long-term effects of these manipulations are still largely unknown [123,125].…”

“…One such perinatal factor is the administration of synthetic oxytocin during delivery (Brotaneck & Hodr, 1967;D'Esopo, 1964;Elert, 1966;Gonz alez-Valenzuela et al, 2014;Plothe, 2010;Sacrez et al, 1969;Wells, 1965). Research suggests that the use of oxytocin to induce labor may have an effect on neonatal feeding reflexes (Olza et al, 2012), on the risk of subsequent psychiatric disorders (Li et al, 2011), and on the child's psychomotor development (Elert, 1966;Sacrez et al, 1969;Wells, 1965); it has also been linked to the etiopathogenesis of autism (Olza, Mar ın, L opez, & Malalana, 2011). These findings highlight the need for specific research on the potential risks that oxytocin perfusion in labor may pose for neonatal and child development.…”
