Oxidized Regenerated Cellulose Resembling Vaginal Cuff Abscess

Abstract: Introduction:Application of oxidized regenerated cellulose is commonly performed in laparoscopy to achieve hemostasis during surgery. The appearance of an abscess resembles oxidized regenerated cellulose, causing imaging studies to be difficult to interpret.Case Description:We describe the cases of 3 patients who underwent oxidized regenerated cellulose placement during laparoscopic gynecologic surgery. They subsequently presented with signs and symptoms resembling an abscess. Computed tomographic imaging can … Show more

“…4 ) were already observed in previous studies [8] , [9] . These complications allow at excluding diagnostic mistakes due to oxidized cellulose as it was described in instrumental studies with images very similar to a post-surgical abscess, granuloma or local tumour recurrence [17] , [18] , [19] .…”

“…Oxidized cellulose has been reported to present as pseudo cancer; abscess and granuloma formation. [2][3][4] The bulk of these cases presented with pain or on routine follow up imaging between 6 and 52 weeks.…”

“…1 The knit mesh facilitates platelet adhesion and aggregation during surgery. 2 However, rarely it may cause a foreignbody reaction, which is indistinguishable from abscess or granuloma formation. This report describes a case of a local tissue reaction due to oxidized regenerated cellulose followed by vault erosion and vaginal bleeding, mimicking pelvic sepsis post hysterectomy.…”

“…Recently, fewtrials and observational reports have tried to define the efficacy and safety of ORC and other topical hemostatic agents in a variety of surgery settings, including hepatectomy [ 30 , 31 ], neurosurgery [ 25 ], gynecologic surgery [ 32 , 33 ], nephrectomy [ 34 , 35 ], and thyroid surgery [ 36 , 37 ]. To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the efficacy and safety of ORC gauze in laparoscopic cholecystectomy.…”
