Oxidative Stress Components Explored in Anoxic and Hypoxic Global Gene Expression Data

Abstract: Global gene expression data were analyzed to search for the genes related to oxidative stress response, to examine the differences between hypoxia and anoxia, and to reveal new components of oxygen deprivation response escaped from the previous analyses. Gene Set Z-score (GSZ) was used to report gene ontology (GO) classes that showed significant regulation and also partial up-and downregulation in Arabidopsis anoxic and hypoxic microarray data sets. Under both anoxia and hypoxia significant upregulation was re… Show more

“…As observed in Arabidopsis (Blokhina et al, 2014 ), one of the main effects of hypoxic conditions in apple cortex is modulation of the oxygenase expression. In addition, the differential expression of a large number of members of the superfamily of cytochromes P450 may indicate the presence of finely-tuned mechanisms activating oxygen in signaling events (Lewis, 2002 ).…”

“…Studies in an array of species and O 2 conditions have noted elevation of transcripts associated with response to oxidative stress, emphasizing their importance (Branco‐Price et al ., ; Blokhina et al ., ). There are also many demonstrated instances of ROS production or damage in response to reoxygenation (reviewed by Fukao & Bailey‐Serres, ; Bailey‐Serres & Chang, ; Blokhina & Fagerstedt, ).…”

“…), resulting in transcriptional reprogramming of a wide‐array of genes, most notably those involved in metabolism and the stress response (Blokhina et al . ). Moreover, the dimerized protein complex of HIF‐1 is crucial in the cellular shift from oxidative phosphorylation to glycolysis, as demonstrated by the concurrent increase of the glucose import proteins GLUT‐1 and GLUT‐4 (Clerici & Matthay, ), and the upregulation of its transcriptional target, pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase (PDK), which blocks the conversion of pyruvate to acetyl CoA (the first substrate of the mitochondrial TCA cycle) by pyruvate dehydrogenase.…”
