Oxidative Stress and Inflammatory Reaction Modulation by White Wine

Abstract: Wine and olive oil, essential components of the Mediterranean diet, are considered important factors for a healthy life style. Tyrosol (T) and caffeic acid (CA) are found in both extra virgin olive oil and in white wine. Three white wines from the northeast Italy and four white wines from Germany were analyzed for their content of T and CA. These compounds were tested for their antioxidant activity and their capacity to modulate three different cytokines: IL-1 beta, IL-6, and TNF-alpha, which are currently con… Show more

“…Studies indicate that also white wine contains effective polyphenols and shows remarkable effects on oxidative stress and inflammatory reaction. E.g., tyrosol and caffeic acid, typical white wine polyphenols, are able to modulate the expression of cytokines IL-Iß, IL-6 and TNF-a which are known to influence the acute phase of the inflammatory response (23,24). Earlier, resveratrol was found to influence T-cell functional response (25).…”

“…Resveratrol has also been proven for its anti-inflammatory effect. Studies prove that compounds such as Tyrosol and Caffeic acid of Resveratrol inhibit the effect of tumor necrosis factor a, interleukin-1b and interleukin 6 productions [16,17]. Dasgupta and Milbrandt [36] demonstrated the neuroprotective effect of Resveratrol, in which Resveratrol helps in stimulating AMP kinase and thereby affect neuronal homeostasis.…”

“…56 It has also been effective in inhibiting leukocyte 5-lipooxygenase, and protecting the Caco-2 intestinal mucosa cells against the cytostatic and cytotoxic effects produced by oxidized LDL. [57][58][59] Tyrosol was reported to have scavenging effects on reactive oxygen and nitrogen species that are implicated in human pathologies such as cardiovascular and thrombotic diseases, 55,60,61 and has been reported as a candidate to be used in stroke therapy due to its neuroprotective effect in rats. 62 It was identified as an auto-regulatory molecule with important implication on the dynamics of growth and morphogenesis in Candida albicans, a process known as quorumsensing, which is characterized by a cellular density-dependent phenomenon.…”

“…These compounds have been reported to possess diverse pharmacological activities. [56][57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78] Tyrosol, also known as 2-(4-Hydroxyphenyl) ethanol, is a well-known phenolic compound present in different dietary sources that can exert mild antioxidant properties based on in vitro and in vivo studies. 53 It has been produced by many fungi including Phialocephala fortinii Rac56, 36 Diaporthe eres, 54 and Glomerella cingulata.…”
