Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in First-Episode Psychosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Abstract: Despite mixed findings, increasing evidence suggests that people with first-episode psychosis (FEP) show increased pro-inflammatory and pro-oxidative status. We used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to conduct a systematic literature search of cross-sectional studies comparing in vivo inflammatory and oxidative blood markers between FEP patients and healthy controls. We analyzed 61 independent samples from 59 publications, including 3002 patients with F… Show more

“…Most of the information about inflammation and oxidative/ nitrosative stress in SZ is from plasma or PBMC studies. These findings attempt to explore (indirectly) the inflammatory state of the brain and to find biomarkers for the disease (Miller et al, 2011;Fraguas et al, 2017). We analyzed the peripheral inflammation and oxidative/nitrosative stress in the NVHL model.…”

“…An accumulation of evidence indicates that the pathophysiology of schizophrenia is partially attributable to heightened OS [ 85 , 86 , 87 , 88 , 89 , 90 ]. Evidence of higher lipid peroxidation levels, changes in plasma antioxidant levels, and alterations in antioxidant enzyme activity have also been found in schizophrenia patients [ 91 ].…”

“…3 But, it is important to note that inflammatory, oxidative stress and metabolic disturbances may precede the FEP and initiation of antipsychotic treatment. [4][5][6] There is also growing evidence regarding metabolic alterations induced by antipsychotic medication that increase the cardiovascular risk of the patients. Circulating Vascular Cell Adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1) and Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 (sICAM-1) are well-known biomarkers of endothelial inflammation and dysfunction that are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis.…”
