Oxidative Pyrolysis of Propane

Abstract: Literature on the oxidative pyrolysis of propane is very sparse for temperatures above 600 OC. Hence the present work was carried out between 600 and 700 OC at 1 atm total pressure using a plug flow quartz reactor and the MS10-C2 mass spectrometer as the analytical tool. Small amounts of oxygen were added into the propane stream such that the oxygen can only participate in the early stages of reaction, thus throwing some light on the nature of the initiation reactions in pyrolysis and oxidation systems. “…It was assumed that reactions are elementary and the rate coefficients obey the Arrhenius relationship. The kinetic parameters of the elementary reactions were adopted from literature [9][10][11][12][13][14][15]. For a limited number of reactions the frequency factor has been varied by AE10% in order to fit the experimental data.…”

“…The structure of the model for the gas phase propane oxidative dehydrogenation was based on several studies about propane pyrolysis and oxidative dehydrogenation [9,12,14,15]. As in the case of ethane ODH, the propane ODH model includes the same categories of reactions (initiation, hydrogen atom abstraction, addition, decomposition reactions, etc.).…”

“…Therefore, the development of single cell protein on an industrial scale to combat the sweeping starvation and malnutrition facing many developing countries should be a welcome idea. Industrially, the palmwine yeasts have been used in ethanol production [3], wine production [4], single cell protein [5]. In generating single cell protein from yeast, many substrates with various modifications have been used for example single cell protein has been generated on hydrocarbon feed-stock [5], potato processing waste water [6] and cheese whey [7].…”

“…Unfortunately the data used to verify the above mechanisms were obtained from very low conversion pyrolysis experiments and covered a very narrow range of temperatures and pressures. Three additional mechanisms have appeared in the literature [13,21,22], but the specific rate constants used in these investigations are not representative of those reported elsewhere.…”
