Oxidative Depolymerization of Kraft Lignin to Aromatics Over Bimetallic V–Cu/ZrO2 Catalysts

Abstract: Zirconia-supported vanadium–copper catalysts (VCux:yZr) were used for the oxidative depolymerization of softwood LignoBoost Kraft lignin (LB). Various VCux:yZr catalysts were prepared (x:y = 0:1, 1:4, 1:2, 3:4, 1:1, and 1:0) by incipient wetness impregnation, and reactions were performed in alkaline water at 150 °C under an O2 pressure of 5 bar for 10 min. 1H–13C HSQC NMR spectroscopy was used for product identification and quantification. The most promising catalyst was VCu1:2Zr, giving a total monomer yield … Show more

“…The preservation of the graphitic structure of the carbon is advantageous in the preparation of an electrocatalyst because it maintains the conductivity of the support materials. Besides the characteristic peaks of the graphite and Pt construction, some additional peaks at 2θ of 29.95° and 31.69° with the surfaces of −111 and 111 [64][65][66][67][68][69] were found in the nanocomposite, which is related to the ZrO2 nanocrystals used in the composition of the catalyst. The average size of the Pt-Pd nanoparticles was evaluated from the Debby-Scherrer formulation using the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the (111) plane.…”

“…These units are connected via different chemical linkages such as 5-O-4, β-1, and 5-5 bonds and the most abundant β-O-4 bond which is targeted in this work, as shown in the illustration [13,14]. Valorizing lignin requires depolymerization via the cleavage of these linkages, so the phenolic units would be further converted into the final products such as vanillin, vanillic acid, and syringaldehyde [15]. [13,16,17].…”
