Methane (CH 4 ) emission by carbon-rich cryosols at the high latitudes in Northern Hemisphere has been studied extensively. In contrast, data on the CH 4 emission potential of carbon-poor cryosols is limited, despite their spatial predominance. This work employs CH 4 flux measurements in the field and under laboratory conditions to show that the mineral cryosols at Axel Heiberg Island in the Canadian high Arctic consistently consume atmospheric CH 4 . Omics analyses present the first molecular evidence of active atmospheric CH 4 -oxidizing bacteria (atmMOB) in permafrost-affected cryosols, with the prevalent atmMOB genotype in our acidic mineral cryosols being closely related to Upland Soil Cluster α. The atmospheric (atm) CH 4 uptake at the study site increases with ground temperature between 0°C and 18°C. Consequently, the atm CH 4 sink strength is predicted to increase by a factor of 5-30 as the Arctic warms by 5-15°C over a century. We demonstrate that acidic mineral cryosols are a previously unrecognized potential of CH 4 sink that requires further investigation to determine its potential impact on larger scales. This study also calls attention to the poleward distribution of atmMOB, as well as to the potential influence of microbial atm CH 4 oxidation, in the context of regional CH 4 flux models and global warming.

1997. Soils as sources and sinks for atmospheric methane. Can. J. Soil Sci. 77: 167-178. Methane is considered to be a significant greenhouse gas. Methane is produced in soils as the end product of the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter. In the absence of oxygen, methane is very stable, but under aerobic conditions it is mineralized to carbon dioxide by methanotrophic bacteria. Soil methane emissions, primarily from natural wetlands, landfills and rice paddies, are estimated to represent about half of the annual global methane production. Oxidation of atmospheric methane by well-drained soils accounts for about 10% of the global methane sink. Whether a soil is a net source or sink for methane depends on the relative rates of methanogenic and methanotrophic activity. A number of factors including pH, Eh, temperature and moisture content influence methane transforming bacterial populations and soil fluxes. Several techniques are available for measuring methane fluxes. Flux estimation is complicated by spatial and temporal variability. Soil management can impact methane transformations. For example, landfilling of organic matter can result in significant methane emissions, whereas some cultural practices such as nitrogen fertilization inhibit methane oxidation by agricultural soils.Key words: Methane, methanogenesis, methane oxidation, soil, flux measurement Topp, E. et Pattey, E. 1997. Le méthane est considéré comme gaz à effet de serre important : c'est le produit terminal de la décomposition de la matière organique en conditions anaérobies. En l'absence d'oxygène, il est très stable, mais en aérobiose, il est minéralisé en gaz carbonique par les bactéries méthanotrophes. Les émissions de méthane provenant surtout des terres humides naturelles, des décharges et des rizières représenteraient environ la moitié de la production annuelle de méthane dans la planète. Par ailleurs l'oxydation de méthane de l'atmosphère par les sols bien drainés compteraient pour environ 10 % du méthane stocké. Que le sol soit une source ou un puits d'accumulation nette de méthane, dépend des taux relatifs des activités méthanogéniques et méthan-otrophiques. Un certain nombre de facteurs, notamment, pH, Eh, la température et le niveau hydrique du sol, influent sur les populations bactériennes qui transforment le méthane ainsi que sur le flux de méthane dans le sol. On dispose de plusieurs techniques pour mesurer le flux de méthane, mais l'estimation de ces flux est compliquée par leur variabilité dans le temps et dans l'espace. Il y a aussi le mode de conduite du sol : ainsi par exemple, la mise en décharge des matières organiques peut provoquer d'importantes émissions de méthane, mais l'inverse quelques pratiques culturales comme le fumier et la fumure azotée entravent l'oxydation du méthane par les terres agricoles.

Long-term tillage and crop residue management in the subarctic: fluxes of methane and nitrous oxide. Can. J. Soil Sci. 77: 565-570. Methane and nitrous oxide are important radiatively active gases that are influenced by agricultural practices. This study assesses long-term tillage, crop residue management, and N fertilization rates on the flux of these two gases at a high latitude site representing the northern fringe of large-scale agriculture. Cumulative methane uptake for the summer was higher from no-tillage plots than tilled plots. This was associated with lower soil water contents with tillage. Thus, the reduction in CH 4 uptake was attributed to water stress on methane oxidizers. At planting, soil water contents were near field capacity, and the no-till plots had the lowest uptake which was attributed to restricted diffusion of methane to active sites. A similar pattern of methane uptake to soil water content was found with the residue management treatments. Removing the straw lowered the soil water content and for most of the season methane uptake was also lower than where the straw had been left on the plots. Nitrogen fertilizer rate had little effect on methane uptake over the summer, but high N rates lowered consumption during the time of active nitrification early in the season. This corresponded to the time of maximum efflux of nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide efflux was greatest at the high N rate where straw was retained on the plots. L'absorption cumulative de méthane durant l'été était plus abondante à partir des parcelles en régime de culture sans travail du sol que dans celles travaillées selon les méthodes classiques. Cette plus forte absorption était associée à l'abaissement de la teneur en eau du sol par les façons culturales répétées. Ainsi la moins forte absorption de CH 4 en régime de travail classique était attribuée au stress hydrique exercé sur les oxydants du méthane. Aux semailles, époque où la teneur en eau du sol est presque à la capacité au champ, ce sont les parcelles conduites en culture sans labour qui manifestaient la plus faible absorption, ce qui s'expliquait par une diffusion réduite du méthane vers les sites d'activité. Un rapport similaire de l'absorption du méthane avec la teneur en eau du sol était observé dans les traitements de gestion des restes de culture. L'enlèvement de la paille provoquait l'abaissement de la teneur en eau du sol, et pour la plus grande partie de la saison, l'absorption du méthane était elle aussi plus faible que là où la paille était laissée sur place. La dose de fumure N n'avait que peu d'effet sur l'absorption du méthane pour la totalité de l'été, mais la dose supérieure causait une réduction de la consommation de méthane dans la phase de nitrification active du début de la saison de végétation, qui coïncidait avec celle d'efflux maximum d'oxyde nitreux. L'efflux de N 2 O était particulièrement abondant à la dose supérieure de fumure N lorsque la paille était laissée sur place.
