The aim of this study was to demonstrate the presence of eggs in beetles collected from sources within the natural environment through molecular techniques. Fifty-four pools of beetles were collected in three villages in Piura, Peru. DNA was extracted using the FastDNA spin kit for soil. Molecular identification of species was then performed through partial amplification of the mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase subunit I gene. Finally, positive samples were sequenced to determine the tapeworm species. Seven positive samples were obtained through polymerase chain reaction amplification. Sequencing confirmed that two samples were from and three samples were from. The other two samples could not be specifically identified. Our findings demonstrate that dung beetles ingest and eggs under natural conditions and suggest that beetles may play a role in the dynamics of transmission of these cestodes.

Twelve 30‐ to 75‐day‐old mixed breed lambs were examined in an intensive system because of sudden recumbency and death. Clinical examination revealed sudden recumbency, visceral pain, and auscultation of respiratory crackles. Lambs died shortly (between 30 minutes and 3 hours) after the onset of clinical signs. The lambs were necropsied, and after routine parasitology, bacteriology and histopathology procedures, the occurrence of acute cysticercosis caused by Cysticercus tenuicollis was confirmed. The use of the suspect infested feed (newly purchased starter concentrate) was discontinued and other lambs of the flock were treated with praziquantel (15 mg/kg, single dose, orally). After these actions, no new cases were observed. The present study showed the importance of preventive measures against cysticercosis in intensive sheep farming systems which include proper storage of feed, preventing feed and environmental access by potential definitive hosts, and implementing consistent parasite control programs in dogs that are in contact with sheep.

Introduction. Oxfendazole (methyl [5-(phenylsulphinyl)-1H benzimidazole- 2-yl] carbamate) has a particularly long metabolic half-life in ruminants, and its metabolite fenbendazole also has anthelminthic action. A very limited number of drugs are available for the treatment of some zoonotic helminth infections, such as neurocysticercosis and echinococcosis. More recent work has expanded oxfendazole’s non-clinical safety profile and demonstrated its safety and bioavailability in healthy human volunteers, thus advancing the possibility of a new and greatly needed option for antiparasitic treatment of geohelminths and tissue parasites. Areas covered. The present article reviews evidence supporting the safety and efficacy of oxfendazole against both gut and tissue dwelling helminths in animals, as well as more recent safety and pharmacokinetic data supporting its potential for use in human parasitoses. Expert commentary. The pharmacokinetics, safety and wide spectrum of efficacy of oxfendazole are consistently demonstrated in intestinal helminth infections of animals as well as in tissue dwelling larval cestode and trematode infections in diverse animal species. Now supported by first-in-human safety and pharmacokinetic data, oxfendazole becomes a promising alternative to the limited portfolio of antiparasitic drugs available to treat helminthic diseases of humans.
