Owen Ridge deep-water submarine landslides: implications for tsunami hazard along the Oman coast

Abstract: The recent discovery of voluminous submarine landslides along the Owen Ridge may represent a source of tsunami hazard for the nearby Oman coast. We assess the severity of this potential hazard by performing numerical simulations of tsunami generation and propagation from the biggest landslide (40 km3 in volume) observed along the Owen Ridge. A finite-difference model, assimilating the landslide to a visco-plastic flow, simulates tsunami generation. Computation results show that Salalah c… Show more

“…Transverse faults are common structures within narrow (b15-km-wide) stepover areas such as the Dead Sea Basin (Ben Avraham and ten Brink, 1989;Kashai and Croker, 1987;Lazar et al, 2006;Smit et al, 2008) or the 20°N Basin along the OFZ (Rodriguez et al, , 2013a. There, transverse faults form during the opening of the pull-apart basin and were shown to transfer strike slip motion from one main bounding strikeslip segment to the other (Ben Avraham and ten Brink, 1989).…”

“…In the wake of the 1998 Sissano event, numerous studies investigated the distribution of submarine landslides along continental slopes, islands and bathymetric highs, as well as their tsunamigenic potential (Canals et al, 2004;Masson et al, 2006;McAdoo et al, 2000;Chaytor et al, 2009;Twichell et al, 2009;Mulder et al, 2009;Tappin, 2010;Iacono et al, 2014;Urgeles and Camerlenghi, 2013;Macías et al, 2015;Palomino et al, 2016;Rodriguez et al, 2012Rodriguez et al, , 2013Rodriguez et al, , 2017.
