Ovulation Induction during the Anovulatory Season in Saimiri sciureus

Abstract: Captive squirrel monkeys show a seasonal response to a subtle ovulation induction regime of five days of progesterone, four days FSH (1 mg/day) and a dose of HCG (500IU), with the minimal response occurring from July to September. A 3 x 3 factorial design with 18 adult female monkeys was used to determine the effects of increasing doses of HCG (500, 1,000, or 1,500 IU) and increasing dose or duration of FSH (1 mg for four days, 2 mg for four days, or 1 mg for five days) on ovulation between early July and mid-… Show more

“…If ovulation does not occur, several techniques have been utilized to induce this process e namely, treatment with exogenous gonadotropins (Dukelow, 1970(Dukelow, , 1979Kuehl and Dukelow, 1975;Kholkute and Nandekar, 1983) or gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) Yeoman et al, 1988). In reference to marmosets, of particular note is the fact that prostaglandins will induce luteal regression, therefore allowing for relatively precise timing or synchronization of ovulation (Summers et al, 1985).…”

“…Since the initial publication of the ovulation regimen used during the spring period [3] and publication of the necessary modification of the regimen for use in the summer season [12] the procedure has been used for a variety of trials where ovulation induction was required. To the best knowledge of these authors, the regime has never been tested for the fertility of induced ovulations.…”

“…We have previously reported a seasonal response of S. sciureus [8] to a standardized ovulation induction regime [3] which requires an increased level of follicle-stimulating hor mone (FSH) during the summer months of July, August and September [12]. Half of the females were subjected to monthly regimes to induce ovulation, the rest of the animals served as controls.…”

“…Females typically weigh <1 kg and are easy to handle. Progress in the ARTs in squirrel monkeys has included ovarian stimulation [14, 20, 28] and in vitro fertilization [11, 13, 15]. We have used ultrasound to monitor pregnancy in our breeding colony [4].…”
