Gravid mosquitoes use chemosensory (olfactory, gustatory, or both) cues to select oviposi tion sites suitable for their offspring. In nature, these cues originate from plant infusions, microbes, mosquito immature stages, and predators. While attractants and stimulants are cues that could show the availability of food (plant infusions and microbes) and suitable conditions (the presence of conspecifics), repellents and deterrents show the risk of predation, infection with pathogens, or strong competition. Many studies have addressed the question of which substances can act as positive or negative cues in different mosquito species, with sometimes apparently contradicting results. These studies often differ in species, substance concentration, and other experimental details, making it difficult to compare the results. In this review, we compiled the available information for a wide range of species and substances, with particular attention to cues originating from larval food, immature stages, predators, and to syn thetic compounds. We note that the effect of many substances differs between species, and that many substances have been tested in few species only, revealing that the information is scattered across species, substances, and experimental conditions.

Concentration-dependent mortality effects were observed for three pure synthetic natural products (alkannin, shikonin, and shikalkin) and three acetylated derivatives of shikonin against Culex pipiens (Culicidae: Diptera) for the first time. The larvicidal properties of all naphthoquinones were evaluated under laboratory conditions against the larvae of the mosquito species C. pipiens biotype molestus, the anthropophilic biotype of the C. pipiens mosquito species. Experimental data of the tested toxicity of quinones revealed generally high efficacy where shikonin (3.9 mg/L) was the most active followed by shikalkin (8.73 mg/L) and alkannin (12.35 mg/L). The insecticidal performance of shikonin-acetylated derivatives was also investigated, aiming at the same time in the establishment of the relationships between the structure and the activity of shikonin-type compounds with larvicidal activity against C. pipiens. Results indicated that naphthoquinones, compared with other natural compounds with larvicidal activity, are very toxic against mosquito larvae and could be a potential source of natural larvicidal substances. Finally, bioassays with shikonin derivatives also revealed that although hydroxylic groups seem to play a secondary role in efficacy, the quinone moiety is essential.

The attract-and-kill strategy requires an intelligent and an efficient combination of an attractant and a killing agent such as a pheromone and an insecticide respectively. The production of the synthetic oviposition pheromone of the mosquito species Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) was already achieved and its combination with three different insecticides were tested. Furthermore three larvicides, an insect growth regulator (pyriproxyfen), an organophosphate (temephos) and a microbial (Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis) were tested in the laboratory against Culex pipiens biotype molestus (Diptera: Culicidae) as agents that can keep water free from mosquito larvae. Larvicidal activity, over a 50-day period, revealed good results primary for temephos and secondary for pyriproxyfen. Temephos killed all the hatched larvae (100%) while pyriproxyfen was effective the first five days (>90%) and for the following days mortality was in a rate between 60 and 80%. The results from oviposition bioassays revealed that except temephos all the tested larvicidals repel gravid females of laying eggs for the first two days. However, when synthetic pheromone is combined with the three larvicidals, temephos and microbial agent followed the same attractant pattern as synthetic pheromone independently.
