Overwrite fabrication and tuning of long period gratings

Abstract: The central wavelengths of the resonance bands are critical aspect of the performance of long period gratings (LPGs) as sensors, particularly for devices designed to operate near the phase matching turning point (PMTP), where the sensitivity to measurements can vary rapidly. Generally, LPGs are characterized by their period, but the amplitude of the amplitude of the index modulation is also an important factor in determining the wavelengths of the resonance bands. Variations in fabrication between LPG sensors … Show more

“…Fortunately, periods of the LPGs considered in this study are among the several hundred micrometers (see the data in Fig. 1(b)), ±1% phase deviation just corresponds to a deviation of ±6 μm in grating period, which is acceptable and realizable by using the current LPG's fabrication platform in [28] and [29], because the commercial translation stage nowadays can easily have a position accuracy up to 0.25 μm, which completely meet the fabrication tolerance demanded for our designs.…”

“…The central wavelengths of the attenuation bands were obtained using Spectrum Interrogation Routine software [43] and Origin was used for further data analysis. The temperature and relative humidity were kept at the same level during the experiments and simultaneously measured using OneWire device.…”

“…The LPFGs are fabricated using the approach described in [ 13 ], where the fiber is illuminated, in a point-by-point fashion, by output from a frequency-quadrupled Nd:YAG laser operating at 266 nm, with a 7 ns pulse width, a rep-rate of 10 Hz, a beam diameter of 10 mm, and an average power of 200 mW. The output beam is conditioned using a focusing lens before being passed through a slit placed in front of the optical fiber.…”
