Overview of Ultrasound Detection Technologies for Photoacoustic Imaging

Abstract: Ultrasound detection is one of the major components of photoacoustic imaging systems. Advancement in ultrasound transducer technology has a significant impact on the translation of photoacoustic imaging to the clinic. Here, we present an overview on various ultrasound transducer technologies including conventional piezoelectric and micromachined transducers, as well as optical ultrasound detection technology. We explain the core components of each technology, their working principle, and describe their manufac… Show more

“…The use of optical interference or resonance methods to detect PA signals without contact has become a hotspot in research on PAI technology in recent years [36][37][38]. It is also an effective method to achieve noncontact PA detection and imaging without using acoustic coupling media.…”

“…There are several reviews on various aspects of PAI- and MEMS-based endoscopic imaging technologies. Manwar et al presented an overview of ultrasound detection technologies for PAI [ 51 ]. Lee et al reviewed a number of MEMS technologies for PAI, including MEMS scanning mirrors, several types of MEMS-based detectors including MUTs, microring resonators, and micromachined silicon acoustic delay lines and multiplexer [ 38 ].…”
