The current study aimed to explore the anti‐diabetic effect of aqueous extracts of Gymnema sylvestre, Trigonella foenum‐graecum and mixture of both the plants in alloxan‐induced diabetic rabbits. A total of 30 rabbits were grouped into six equal groups as: normal control, diabetic control, diabetic treated with 300 mg/kg body weight (bw) G. sylvestre, diabetic treated with 300 mg/kg bw T. foenum‐graecum, diabetic treated with 300 mg/kg bw mixture of both the plants and diabetic treated with 500 mg/kg bw metformin for 4 weeks. Diabetes was induced to all the study group animals except normal control by intravenous administration of alloxan monohydrate (80 mg/kg bw). Blood glucose was measured by glucometer and other biochemical parameters were determined through various kit methods. Serum insulin was measured through ELISA kit method. Results showed that both the plants and metformin significantly (p < .05) decreased the fasting blood glucose. Hypoglycemic activity of aqueous extract of G. sylvestre and metformin was found slightly higher than aqueous extract of T. foenum‐graecum and the mixture of both the plants. However, a significant (p < .05) rise in insulin secretion was observed in studied plants extract treated rabbits. Serum urea, creatinine, and liver enzymes were found reduced significantly (p < .05) in treated rabbits whereas packed cell volume was also returned to normal in treated animals as compared to control group. The study concluded that G. sylvestre and T. foenum‐graecum extracts have comparable effects with metformin in normalizing the blood glucose level and have more pronounced effect than metformin in restoring the serum biochemical parameters to normal levels. Hence, these plants may be the good alternative medicine in managing the diabetes mellitus.

Eastern herbal medicines (HMs) are plant-derived naturally occurring substances with minimum or no industrial processing that have long been used in traditional medicine. Aflatoxins are frequent contaminants of plants. Therefore, these mycotoxins are likely to contaminate HMs and pose a health risk to individuals using them on a regular basis as preventive or curative treatments of various diseases. The present study aimed to determine aflatoxin levels in the most popular Pakistani HM formulations and to assess the health risk associated with the intake of aflatoxins. A total of 400 samples of HM formulations collected from four districts of Punjab were analyzed for the quantification of aflatoxins, out of which 52.5% were found to be contaminated. The average daily dose (ADD) of AFB1 and AFs through the intake of HM formulations ranged between 0.00483 and 0.118 ng/kg bw/day and between 0.00579 and 1.714 ng/kg bw/day, respectively. The margin of exposure (MOE) and population cancer risk ranged from 99.49 to 29378.8 and from 0.00011 to 0.0325 liver cancer cases/105 individuals/year (0.0075–2.455 liver cancer cases/105 individuals/75 years), respectively. Despite the low exposure to aflatoxins from HM formulations in the four studied Punjab (Pakistan) districts, the frequent contamination of the analyzed samples suggests that official measures should be considered to manage the associated risk.

Viral infections remain a challenge in human and veterinary medicine due to factors such as viral mutations, new viruses, toxic effects, disease severity, intracellular viability, high costs, and limited availability of antiviral drugs. Despite advancements in immunization and antiviral drugs, there is a need for new and more effective antiviral compounds. Plants produce secondary metabolites that have shown antiviral activity, such as alkaloids, flavonoids, and essential oils. Advanced analytical techniques like HPLC, GC-MS, and NMR spectroscopy are used to identify and characterize these bioactive compounds. Flavonoids, terpenoids, lignans, sulphides, polyphenolics, coumarins, and saponins are among the groups of bioactive compounds found in plants that have demonstrated antiviral activity against viruses like HIV, influenza, herpes simplex, and hepatitis. Screening plant extracts and isolating active compounds allow scientists to identify potential new antiviral drugs. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown significant antiviral activity of plant extracts and their bioactive compounds. However, further research is needed to ensure safety, investigate drug interactions, and explore combination therapies with other natural products. The use of advanced analytical techniques helps identify and characterize bioactive compounds that target different stages of the viral life cycle. Examples of plant extracts and compounds with antiviral activity against specific viruses are mentioned, including SARS-CoV-2 and various veterinary viruses. The abstract emphasizes the ongoing research on natural sources, particularly plants, for the discovery of new and effective antiviral compounds, while highlighting the need for extensive studies on safety, drug interactions, and combination therapies.
