Overview of the FTU results

Abstract: Experiments on runaway electrons have been performed for the determination of the critical electric field for runaway generation. A large database of post-disruption runaway beams has been analyzed in order to identify linear dynamical models for new position and current runaway beam controllers, and experiments of electron cyclotron assisted plasma start-up have shown the presence of runaway electrons also below the expected electric field threshold,

“…The principal goal of employing a divertor configuration is to reduce the particle-wall interaction, where the charged particles strike the divertor surface well away from the main plasma. The foremost objective of ADITYA-U is to prepare the physics and the technological base for future ITER and DEMO machines by performing dedicated experiments, such as the generation and control of RE, disruption prediction and mitigation studies, and plasma position control and confinement improvement studies with shaped plasmas [9][10][11][12].…”

“…However, an accurate ECH RE source model is not yet available. Experimental evidence of such a source has been reported [41,42]. On the other hand, auxiliary heating in general might also provide a beneficial effect by augmenting the plasma temperature and hence decreasing its resistivity and thus the required E during the current ramp-up, which aspect is shown in more detail in section 4.…”

“…KSTAR and WEST are the only existing tokamaks in this study that makes use of super-conducting magnets, as ITER will also deploy in the future. Several of these devices have reported over the years, individual studies on specifically startup RE, such as notably FTU [39][40][41][42][43], JET [5,31,44,45], to some extend also C-MOD [46], NSTX [47] and recently WEST [48][49][50][51][52]. Other notable references to start-up RE from devices, not included in this particular study are [25,26,30,33,36,53,54].…”

“…Such issues can be studied in detail in dedicated programs in smaller experiments that permit the realization of relevant scenarios involving significant fractions of REs. [2][3][4] In this context, the recent integration of different diagnostics 5 and new software tools within the FTU real-time RE control system 6,7 is contributing to the characterization of RE dynamics 8 to the study of effective mitigation strategies 9 and to the design of control-oriented dynamical models of current, horizontal, and vertical displacement for REs in the postdisruption phase. 10 A specific activity was focused on the design, development, and construction of a new plasma diagnostic, referred to as REIS (RE Imaging and Spectroscopy system) to detect and study in-flight REs.…”
