Overview of the Fernald Dosimetry Reconstruction Project and Source Term Estimates for 1951–1988

Abstract: The Feed Materials Production Center, northwest of Cincinnati, processed uranium concentrates and uranium compounds recycled from other stages of nuclear weapons production, as well as some uranium ore and thorium. Particulate releases were primarily uranium (natural, depleted, and slightly enriched. In addition, two large silos containing radium-bearing residues were emission sources of radon and its decay products. The Fernald Dosimetry Reconstruction Project was undertaken to help the Centers for Disease Co… Show more

“…Women who had uranium/radiation exposure, as defined by applying an exposure dosimetry algorithm developed by CDC, were not eligible for this study. Extensive uranium dose reconstruction demonstrated that over 60% of the cohort had such minimal exposure to uranium and radon that their cumulative ionising radiation exposure was less than 3.2% over lifetime background levels (Meyer et al , 1996; Killough et al , 1998a, 1998b; Pinney et al , 2003). …”

“…This model was applied to estimate releases from waste material stored in the K-65 silos at the west side of the plant (Meyer et al, 1996). The radon dispersion model was developed by Radiological Assessments Corporation (RAC) under contract to the CDC as part of the overall dose reconstruction that also included uranium and thorium doses from air and water transport.…”

“…The functional form fit to the available values is extended beyond the data points. For instance, at Fernald, Ohio, scrubber filter efficiencies measured between 1961 and 1965 were extrapolated as far back as 1951 and as far forward as 1981, assuming similar trends before and after (23).…”
