Dr Adem Karahoca received his B.Sc. degree in Mathematical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University, M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Software Engineering from Istanbul University. His research interests and expertise include mobile telecommunication software, data mining, management information systems, bioinformatics, information systems, business intelligence, computers in education, and human computer interaction. He has written 26 IT related books and book chapters. He has supervised different variety of IT research and application projects. He is currently working on the churn and fraud management in telecom.

Objectives: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) impacts the quality of life of the affected patients. The present study aimed to determine the effects of home-based self-care program follow-up on re-hospitalization frequency and quality of life in COPD patients. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was performed on 44 COPD patients at Masih Daneshvari Hospital in Tehran City, Iran, in 2018. For collecting the necessary data, we used demographic data checklist, COPD Assessment Test, and the St. George’s Quality of Life questionnaire. We used SPSS v. 22 for analyzing the obtained data. Results: The present study revealed that the highest age frequency was in the 61-70 years age group. Moreover, the male gender had the highest frequency and most research participants had elementary school education; the highest frequency regarding the disease duration was >5 years. Besides and the hospitalization frequency was once a year. The present study findings indicated that the provided self-care program follow-up reduced the re-hospitalization frequency and increased the quality of life of the explored COPD patients (P<0.001). Discussion: The obtained results revealed that implementing a course of home-based follow-up self-care program could reduce re-hospitalization and increase the quality of life of COPD patients; thus, it is suggested that such follow-up programs be included in COPD treatment plans.

Telemedicine and m-Health conceptm-Health is an abbreviation for mobile health. m-Health can be defined as any kind of service which facilitates the flow of information over some form of mobile network (cellular, PDAs, laptops, wireless, etc), that enhance the delivery of appropriate medical support or healthcare solutions (Fong, et al, 2011, Sanderson & Grondlund, 2010.As pointed out in (Vital Wave Consulting, 2009), tens of millions of citizens that never had regular access to a fixed-line telephone or computer now use mobile devices as daily tools for communication and data transfer. This growing ubiquity of mobile phones is a central element in the promise of mobile technologies for health. m-Health terminology has emerged as a sub-segment of eletronic health (eHealth). In fact these terms should not be confused. As m-Health can be seen as the access point to capture and enter the remote collected information, providing information to healthcare clinics and health workers, e-Health involves digitizing patient records and creation of electronic systems to standarize access to patient data within a national system (Vital Wave Consulting, 2009).It is important to mention that m-Health applications are not restricted to remote data collection. There are many other important applications in this field. Besides to remote monitoring, applications and tasks that are related include communication and training for healthcare workers, disease and epidemic outbreak tracking, diagnostic and treatment support, among others. mHealth applications include mobile devices used to gather information related to community health, providing useful information to health workers and patients. This is crucial as mobile computing allows real time monitoring of vital signs of patients and direct medical care. Review of other applications reported in m-Healthm-Health technologies are extremely dynamic and a variety of applicattions that are being conceived are in continous expansion. Applications that can be considered vital to m-Health in developing countries according to (Vodafone Foundation Partnership, 2009) are: education and awareness, remote data collection, remote monitoring, communication and training for healthcare workers, disease and epidemic outbreak tracking, and diagnostics and treatment support.
