Overview of Recent Progress in Lightning Research and Lightning Protection

Abstract: Abstract-This review paper, prepared for this second special issue on lightning of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY, summarizes major publications on lightning and lightning protection since the first special issue published in November 1998, i.e., during the last decade. The review is organized in the following five sections: lightning discharge-observations, lightning discharge-modeling, lightning occurrence characteristics/lightning locating systems, lightning electromagnetic pulse and… Show more

“…In particular, lightning return stroke models have been intensely studied, since the return stroke flashes are the most powerful known lightning processes [14,15]. A significant limitation of most of these models is that the lightning channel is usually assumed to be straight and vertical although, actually, the path followed by a return stroke is tortuous [16].…”

“…There have been many studies conducted on the overvoltage due to indirect lightning [2][3][4][5][6][7][8]16]. This paper calculates the lightning-induced voltage on the overhead line using the method proposed by H. K. Hoidalen [16], which has been implemented using the EMTP/MODELS.…”

“…Lightning-induced voltages are a major issue for the electromagnetic compatibility and power quality due to the widespread use of sensitive devices connected to the distribution lines. The lightning performance for lightning protection has been studied by many researchers [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. These are mainly focused on the calculation of overvoltage or flashover rate at various configurations of lightning protection system, such as ground wire, lightning arrester, grounding resistance, and etc.…”

“…Полученные результаты могут быть использованы при раз-работке методов искусственного инициирования молнии типа " облако−земля" обеих полярностей и целенаправленной разрядки грозового облака. В настоящее время гипотеза инициирования молнии " облако− земля" массивами крупных гидрометеоров (в первую очередь гра-дин), находящихся в грозовом облаке, снова становится одной из приоритетных [1,2]. Именно ей уделяется много внимания как при теоретическом, так и при экспериментальном моделировании [3][4][5][6].…”
