Overview of Quality of Life Research in Older People with Visual Impairment

Abstract: During the past two decades, a number of studies have investigated the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of older people with visual impairment, but the information is fragmented concerning health care providers in the field of gerontology. In this review, findings of HRQOL studies in older adults with different types of age-related ocular disorders or conditions are summarized. Apart from medical treatment and vision rehabilitation, factors that may influence the HRQOL of visually impaired older adults a… Show more

“…EuroQol Questionnaire). 69 Measurements of VA and other measures of visual performance, such as contrast sensitivity, are highly correlated with activities of daily living. 9 Performance on various tasks of daily living was assessed in a study of > 2500 participants aged between 65 and 84 years, which excluded those with Standardised Mini-Mental State Examination (sMMSE) scores of < 18 (i.e.…”

“…The association between VI and various aspects of daily living, both social and physical, is well documented. 11,45,[69][70][71]76,145 However, people with moderate to severe cognitive impairment have often been excluded from these studies. 56,70,145 PrOVIDe uses only VA to define VI, and other aspects of visual function are known to influence visual performance, notably contrast sensitivity 70,76 and visual fields.…”

“…A combination of limitations has the potential to impact on an individual's mood and motivation. These sequelae have been reported in populations with visual impairment (Chia et al, 2004;McBain et al, 2014;Tsai et al, 2003;Wang, Chan, & Chi, 2014).…”

“…The consequences of vision impairment span across the lifecycle and its severity depends on the age of occurrence. As reviewed in the World's Report on Vision in 2010, the consequences of vision impairment in adults with vision impairment are associated with poor quality of life (QoL) [3], lower rates of workforce participation and productivity, and higher rates of depression and anxiety when compared to the general population [1].…”

“…This influence can be attributed to the individual reactions to surgical outcome, as failure to meet self-perceived expectations may potentiate psychological disorders and worsen the QoL [17]. Furthermore, the presence of postoperative complications like macular oedema, intraocular haemorrhages and postoperative emmetropia which obstructs visual acuity may worsen visual functions and activates the presence of common psychiatric disorders and by extension the QoL [3].…”
