Overview of Progress on the EU DEMO Reactor Magnet System Design

Abstract: The DEMO reactor is expected to be the first application of fusion for electricity generation in the near future. To this aim conceptual design activities are progressing in Europe (EU) under the lead of the EUROfusion Consortium in order to drive on the development of the major tokamak systems. In 2014 the activities carried out by the magnet system project team were focused on the Toroidal Field (TF) magnet system design and demonstrated major achievements in terms of concept proposals and of consolidated ev… Show more

“…The conductor was fixed at the both ends to avoid changes in twist pitch lengths. The 316 L alloy jackets were made with inner dimensions of 11.9×62.1 mm corresponding to the cable dimensions according to the conductor specification [1,6]. The jacket halves of the sample for the AC dipole test were spot welded together with temperature control.…”

“…Both sample conductors use Nb 3 Sn superconducting technology with forced He flow as a coolant. The conductor's design is described in detail in [4][5][6]. One of the major differences between the conductors is the different approach of the magnet system winding.…”

“…HE FUTURE, post-ITER European fusion tokamak DEMO is being developed by the EUROfusion Consortium [1]. The conceptual design of the magnet system [2] so far focused on the central solenoid and toroidal field (TF) magnet. The latter was proposed in four alternative designsone based on HTS, and three employing the conventional LTS conductors [2].…”

“…In the framework of the Roadmap to Fusion Electricity Horizon 2020 [1], EUROfusion consortium is coordinating a comprehensive design study of a DEMOnstration fusion power plant (DEMO) [2] with the aim to demonstrate that a fusion reactor can produce net electrical power and supply energy to the grid. This paper reports on the latest status of the pre-conceptual design of the DEMO magnet system, focusing on the progress since the results already mentioned in [3]. In Section 2 three configurations for the toroidal field (TF) winding packs are proposed, based on different winding schemes (layer vs. pancake) and Nb 3 Sn manufacturing technology (wind & react (W&R) vs. react & wind (R&W)).…”
