Overview of positioning technologies from fitness-to-purpose point of view

Abstract: Abstract-Even though Location Based Services (LBSs) are being more and more widely-used and this shows a promising future, there are still many challenges to deal with, such as privacy, reliability, accuracy, cost of service, power consumption and availability. There is still no single low-cost positioning technology which provides position of its users seamlessly indoors and outdoors with an acceptable level of accuracy and low power consumption. For this reason, fitness of positioning service to the purpose … Show more

“…According to a user-survey [23], [24] the most important factors to evaluate quality of positioning service, from users' point of view, are accuracy, availability and coverage, cost, power consumption and privacy. Therefore, this paper considers the same set of parameters to compare and evaluates the positioning technologies from the users' point of view.…”

“…For example, Taking the accuracy against availability in the first line, the 1/3 means that the value 1 was given to accuracy and 3 to availability, meaning that availability is 3 times more important for the user than accuracy. The study uses as expert opinion the discussion among the authors and all the tables considered are provided in [25] [23]. The second approach is to use the survey's results [24] to fill out the table.…”

“…However this growth has faced several challenges and obstacles, including the availability of accurate positioning technologies especially for indoor use [6][7], cost of the service, location privacy issues [8], high power consumption [9], and the user interface of the apps. Some of these challenges are not directly linked to the technology; such "non-technical" challenges, requirements and issues seem to be easier to handle or solved and having a better understanding of them can help the policy makers, manufacturers, service providers and developers to take actions on them and help the LBS markets to grow with a higher growth rate, attracting more users.…”
