Among sustainable alternatives to fossil fuel, proton exchange membrane fuel cells are promising devices that deliver electricity from hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water. The transformation of the fuel and oxidant however relies on rare‐metal catalysts. H2/O2 enzymatic biofuel cells thus emerge as sustainable biotechnological devices in which chemical catalysts are replaced by hydrogenases at the anode and multicopper oxidases at the cathode. This review discusses the recent breakthroughs and the limitations in all the components of H2/O2 biofuel cells: 1) Catalytic mechanisms involved in multicopper oxidases and hydrogenases, in addition to the new potential of enzymes from the biodiversity pool, which exhibit outstanding properties. 2) The molecular basis for oriented enzyme immobilization on the electrochemical interfaces as a prerequisite for a fast direct electron‐transfer rate. 3) The requirement for 3D networks to enhance current densities. 4) The production of H2 from biomass. 5) The history of H2/O2 biofuel cells and recent devices, which also highlights the remaining issues that will allow the use of such devices in low‐power applications.

Abstract. Supplying more and more energy is an essential task of today's energy industry. In the last few decades, in addition to traditional methods of energy production, alternative energy sources have been developing at a fast rate. One of the devices that can use these sources is the fuel cell (FC). FCs can be a power source of the future mainly due to their high efficiency, their low impact on the environment and the possibility of powering with different fuels. Most often, FCs are powered by hydrogen. However, issues with its cheap production and storage are the reasons for seeking new fuels for FCs. Yet it must be a fuel that will provide a zero or low emission level. One of these fuels can be vegetable oil. The paper presents the measurements for the electrooxidation of coconut oil emulsion on a platinum electrode (with smooth surfaces). The electrooxidation was performed in an aqueous solution of H2SO4. Electrochemical measurements were performed in a glass cell with three electrodes. The obtained maximum current density was equal to 21 mA/cm 2 . Therefore, there is a fundamental possibility of direct electricity production from coconut oil with acid electrolyte.

A CFD (computational fluid dynamics) model has been presented to simulate the steam reforming reaction of DME in this study. A three-dimensional numerical model introduced by the commercial software COMSOL was used to investigate the fluid flow of reformer bed and heating tubes, the energy transport of reformer bed and heating tubes, and the mass transport of reformer bed. The governing equations in the model consist of conservations of mass, momentum, energy and chemical species. In order to optimize the process of reaction, the steam to DME ratio, the inlet temperature, and porosity were investigated. The simulation results showed the changes of temperature distribution, DME conversion and hydrogen production of the steam reforming reaction with different operation conditions.
