Overview of Human Cytomegalovirus Pathogenesis

Abstract: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a human pathogen that infects greater than 50 % of the human population. HCMV infection is usually asymptomatic in most individuals. That is, primary infection or reactivation of latent virus is generally clinically silent. HCMV infection, however, is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in the immunocompromised and chronic inflammatory diseases in the immunocompetent. In immunocompromised individuals (acquired immune deficiency syndrome and transplant patients, d… Show more

“…HCMV infection causes severe disease in immunocompromised patients, including allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) and solid organ transplant (SOT) patients, and in congenitally infected neonates (1,(3)(4)(5). In the immunocompetent, HCMV is associated with chronic inflammatory diseases and some tumors (4,(6)(7)(8)(9)(10). HCMV pathogenesis is due to infection of most host organs and the resulting overt organ disease (1,3,(11)(12)(13).…”

“…HCMV infection results in a wide range of pathogenic outcomes dependent upon the age and immune status of the host (2). Infection of immunocompetent hosts is usually asymptomatic or only mildly symptomatic (3,4); however, it can cause infectious mononucleosis, is a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease (5)(6)(7)(8)(9), and has been linked to certain types of cancers in otherwise healthy individuals (10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15).…”

“…he betaherpesvirus human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) affects 50 to 98% of people, causing severe symptoms in newborns and a lifetime latent infection that can be lethal in immunocompromised individuals (1). HCMV can also establish recurrent secondary infections after reactivation from latency (2).…”
