IntroductionWildlife represents an increasingly important source of pathogens of medical and veterinary importance. Surveillance in wildlife offers an insight on current epidemiological status of selected pathogens and help to prevent spillovers to humans and livestock.Material and methodsOur study included 312 wild ruminants belonging to five species: Roe deer (n = 134), red deer (n = 113), Alpine chamois (n = 53), European mouflon (n = 10) and Alpine ibex (n = 2). Seven pathogens that may have profound effect on human/livestock health and economic viability of the farms were tested using serological methods.ResultsAntibodies against Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum, Coxiella burnetii, Brucella spp., Chlamydophila abortus, Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) and Mycobacterium bovis were detected in 34.62% (108/312), 0.96% (3/312), 2.24% (7/312), 0, 0.96% (3/312), 0, 0.64% (2/312) of animals tested, respectively. Because of low prevalences, risk factors were assessed only for T. gondii. Sex (female>male) and species (roe deer>red deer, roe deer>Alpine chamois) were significantly associated with the T. gondii positive outcome, while age was not.DiscussionAdult males had the lowest T. gondii prevalence which offers future research opportunities. The lower seroprevalence of most investigated pathogens suggests game meat, if properly cooked, as being relatively safe for human consumption. This is the first study investigating the seroprevalence and associated risk factors of selected pathogens in wild ruminants in Slovenia.

The process of muscle development and intramuscular fat (IMF) deposition is quite complex and controlled by both mRNAs and ncRNAs. Long-stranded non-coding RNAs (LncRNAs) are involved in various biological processes in mammals while also playing a critical role in muscle development and fat deposition. In the present study, RNA-Seq was used to comprehensively study the expression of lncRNAs and mRNAs during muscle development and intramuscular fat deposition in postnatal Tianzhu white yaks at three stages, including 6 months of age (calve, n=6), 30 months of age (young cattle, n=6) and 54 months of age (adult cattle, n=6). The results indicated that a total of 2101 lncRNAs and 20855 mRNAs were screened across the three stages, of which the numbers of differential expression (DE) lncRNAs and DE mRNAs were 289 and 1339, respectively, and DE lncRNAs were divided into eight different expression patterns based on expression trends. GO and KEGG enrichment analysis revealed that some DE mRNAs overlapped with target genes of lncRNAs, such as NEDD4L, SCN3B, AGT, HDAC4, DES, MYH14, KLF15 (muscle development), ACACB, PCK2, LIPE, PIK3R1, PNPLA2, MGLL (intramuscular fat deposition). These DE mRNAs were significantly enriched in critical muscle development and IMF deposition related pathways and GO terms, such as AMPK signaling pathway, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, PPAR signaling pathway, etc. In addition, lncRNA-mRNA co-expression network analysis revealed that six lncRNAs (MSTRG.20152.2, MSTRG.20152.3, XR_001351700.1, MSTRG.8190.1, MSTRG.4827.1 and MSTRG.11486.1) may play a major role in Tianzhu white yak muscle development and lipidosis deposition. Therefore, this study enriches the database of yak lncRNAs and could help to further explore the functions and roles of lncRNAs in different stages of muscle development and intramuscular fat deposition in the Tianzhu white yak.

A survey was conducted from 2018 to 2023 to assess the presence of Salmonella in 280 hunted wild boar (carcasses after evisceration and skinning, N = 226; liver, N = 258; and fecal samples, N = 174). The overall prevalence was 2.86% (confidence interval 95%, 1.45–5.45%) with five positive samples detected in carcasses, three in the liver, and one in a fecal sample. This prevalence was in line with those found in nearby areas denoting a low number of positive samples. Positive animals were over 24 months of age and weighed, before skinning, 59.00 ± 9.11 Kg and no difference was detected in microbial loads between samples positive and negative for Salmonella (aerobic colony count of 4.59 and 4.66 log CFU/400 cm2, and Enterobacteriaceae count of 2.89 and 2.73 log CFU/400 cm2 (mean values) in positive and negative subjects, respectively). Salmonella Stanleyville was the most frequently isolated serotype. A semiquantitative risk assessment was conducted for the first time in game meat considering two products, meat cuts intended for cooking and fermented dry sausages. Only proper cooking can reduce the risk of ingestion of Salmonella to the minimum for consumers, whereas ready-to-eat dry sausages constitute risk products in terms of foodborne Salmonellosis (risk score of 64 out of 100).
