Overview of Fiber Optic Sensor Technologies for Strain/Temperature Sensing Applications in Composite Materials

Abstract: This paper provides an overview of the different types of fiber optic sensors (FOS) that can be used with composite materials and also their compatibility with and suitability for embedding inside a composite material. An overview of the different types of FOS used for strain/temperature sensing in composite materials is presented. Recent trends, and future challenges for FOS technology for condition monitoring in smart composite materials are also discussed. This comprehensive review provides essential inform… Show more

“…Among all different types of POF sensors, those based on fibre gratings written in POFs have attracted great attention since they were first demonstrated in 1999, due to their quite distinctive properties such as higher sensitivity and larger dynamic range compared to their silica counterparts [22]. A number of earlier reviews on POF gratings and their sensing applications had appeared in reports by Peng [23], Canning [24], Kuang [20], Argyros [12,13], Peters [16], Bilro [17], Zubia [21], Granville [18] and Farrell [25]. The difficulties and challenges encountered during the photo-inscription of gratings in mPOFs have also been reviewed by Berghmans [26].…”

“…As FBGs in standard optical fibers are sensitive to both strain and temperature, different techniques have been set-up to discriminate between these two measurands. To cite but a few: FBGs in the same optical fiber where one is protected from thermal effect15, two gratings inscribed at two different wavelengths achieving different sensitivities16, a single FBG measured at its first and second order Bragg wavelength17, Bragg mode and cladding modes of standard tilted FBGs18, FBG in temperature insensitive specialty fibers19, among others1320.…”
