Overview of Federal Aviation Administration Aviation Safety Research for Aircraft Icing

Abstract: SUMMARYThe cure chemistry, thermal stability and fire behaviour of a series of fire-resistant cyanate ester-epoxy blends were examined. The dicyanate and diepoxide of 1, 1-dichloro-2, 2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethylene (bisphenol-C, BPC) were combined in various molar ratios and the reaction chemistry was monitored using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The fire behaviour of the BPC cyanate-epoxy blends was studied in flaming and non-flaming combustion, us… Show more

“…The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) of the United States attributed the accident to icing meteorology caused by supercooled large droplets(SLD) with a diameter larger than 50μm 4 . After the Roselawn air accident, the icing meteorology, icing mechanisms, icing detection technology, anti-icing/de-icing technology, and airworthiness certification for SLD have become hot research topics internationally [5][6][7][8] . Subsequently, FAA issued Amendment 140 in 2014 9 , and EASA issued Amendment 16 in 2015 10 .…”

“…Aircraft deicing can be divided into three types in accordance with deicing mechanism: freezing inhibitors, heat melting ice, and surface deformation. 3 It has already emerged a variety of new technologies, and some technology has been successfully tested and applied in aircraft ground deicing. Typical of these technologies include infrared deicing technology, microwave deicing technology, and steam deicing technology.…”

“…The role of ground support work of aircraft becomes significant important with the development idea "Security, Efficiency, Green" in our civil aviation field. The ice or snow on ground that can reduce the lifting power when taking off and damage the structure block of aircraft [1] . In this case, FAA demands that the ice or others on the surface of aircraft must be cleared up before takeoff.…”
