LSI +61 • 303 is an exotic binary system consisting of a ∼ 10 M ⊙ B star and a compact object which is probably a neutron star. The system is associated with the interesting radio source GT 0236+610 that exhibits bright radio outbursts with a period of 26.5 days. We report the results of continuous daily radio interferometric observations of GT 0236+610 at 2.25 and 8.3 GHz from 1994 January to 1996 February. The observations cover 25 complete (and 3 partial) cycles with multiple observations each day. We detect substantial cycle-to-cycle variability of the radio emission characterized by a rapid onset of the radio flares followed by a more gradual decrease of the emission. We detect a systematic change of the radio spectral index α (defined as S ν ∝ ν α ) which typically becomes larger than zero at the onset of the radio outbursts. This behavior is suggestive of expansion of material initially optically thick to radio frequencies, indicating either that synchrotron or inverse Compton cooling are important or that the free-free optical depth to the source is rapidly changing. After two years of observations, we see only weak evidence for the proposed 4-year periodic modulation in the peak flux of the outbursts. We observe a secular trend in the outburst phases according the the best published ephemeris. This trend indicates either orbital period evolution, or a drift in outburst orbital phase in response to some other change in the system.

The effect of sucrose, glucose and sodium chloride at different concentrations on clarity of starch and amylopectin pastes was studied. It was found that clarity of amaranth, waxy corn and normal corn starch pastes tended to increase by increasing carbohydrate concentrations. The percentage of transmittance (%T) values for the same starch sample with sucrose and glucose did not present significantly differences (α=0.05). The starches with sodium chloride did not show a defined pattern. The %T for amaranth and waxy corn amylopectin pastes with all solutes tended to increase by increasing solute concentration. Interestingly, the %T values among all amylopectins at a given solute concentration were significantly different (α=0.05) probably due to different chain length proportion in such amylopectins. The same amylopectin in presence of sucrose and glucose did not show %T significantly different (α=0.05) but with sodium chloride those values were different (α=0.05).

This paper is concerned with an extension of the well known Kaluza-Klein mechanism. As the standard ansatz for Kaluza-Klein reduction implies the existence of a gauge potential associated with the KK field strength, it follows immediately that this field strength satisfies its Bianchi identity. Hence, the standard KK formalism breaks down in the presence of a violated Bianchi identity. This occurs for example in the context of D6 sources. We will investigate and partially solve this problem in the context of the type IIA/M-theory duality. Our discussion is motivated by the construction of gauge/string duals with backreacting flavor branes using D6-branes, which appear in M-theory as KK-monopoles. We are able to derive source-modified equations of motion for the eleven-dimensional theory, and are subsequently able to obtain the source-modified type IIA equations by direct dimensional reduction.Comment: 25 pages plus appendices - As published in JHE
