Overproduction Timing Errors in Expert Dancers

Abstract: The authors investigated how expert dancers achieve accurate timing under various conditions. They designed the conditions to interfere with the dancers' attention to time and to test the explanation of the interference effect provided in the attentional model of time processing. Participants were 17 expert contemporary dancers who performed a freely chosen duration while walking and executing a bilateral cyclic arm movement over a given distance. The dancers reproduced that duration in different situations of… Show more

“…The movements, gestures, and figures are practiced repeatedly to perfection and unexpected events are suppressed. There is synchronization of one's movements to those of another dance partner or to the rhythm of the music, where timing and attention have important effects (Minvielle-Moncla et al 2008).…”

“…For instance, a precise integration between the visual and motor systems is crucial for timing the kick of a football in motion (Egan et al, 2007 ). Similarly, well-developed audio-motor integration is essential in order to synchronize movements with external auditory cues (sensorimotor synchronization; e.g., Repp and Su, 2013 ), like in contemporary dancing (Minvielle-Moncla et al, 2008 ).…”
