Overproduction of low density lipoproteins associated with coronary heart disease.

Abstract: The turnover rates of low density lipoprotein-apolipoprotein (apoLDL) were determined in eight men with coronary heart disease (CHD) and seven men matched for age, weight, and plasma lipid levels who were used for controls. The CHD patients were normocholesterolemic (plasma cholesterol = 204 ± 8 mg/dl SEM) as were the control subjects (227 ±15 mg/dl). The concentrations of plasma LDL cholesterol and apoLDL were similar for the two groups. In contrast, the synthetic rates of apoLDL were higher in the CHD patien… Show more

“…17 Increased hepatic production of apoB may also independently predict coronary risk. 18 We suggest that optimal regulation of the kinetics of apoB in the metabolic syndrome following statin therapy will require inhibition of cholesterol absorption with either a drug such as ezetimibe 19 or with dietary plant sterols.…”

“…Art increased turnover of apoLDL itself may be a risk factor for CHD. In a recent study 46 we measured the turnover of apoLDL in a group of patients with documented CHD but with normal lipid levels. They were compared to a similar normolipidemic group without CHD.…”

“…Elevated plasma levels of apolipoprotein B (apoB) and its associated cholesterol are well recognized risk factors for the development of atherosclerosis (1)(2)(3)(4). There are two forms of apoB found in mammals.…”
