Overpressure processing of Ag-sheathed Bi-2212 tapes

Abstract: Abstract-A critical problem for melt-processed silversheathed Bi-2212 tapes is gas release during heat treatment which deforms the sheath ("bubbling") and forms voids in the superconducting core. An overpressure furnace is used to study how the extent of bubbling changes with the total pressure (Plot). By processing in PI,,, up to 9 atmospheres with constant oxygen partial pressure (pOz = 1 atm), bubbling in coils is eliminated. The critical current density increases with increasing PI,. Also, the phase assemb… Show more

“…In contrast, cold isostatic pressing (CIPping), swaging, and hot isostatic pressing (HIPping) are densification techniques that keep the round conductor shape. Overpressure processing (OP) is a modified HIPping with gas flowing for better oxygen partial pressure control [21,22]. It has been very successful for processing Bi-2223 tapes [23][24][25], and is used by Sumitomo Electric for manufacturing Bi-2223 conductor [25].…”
