Overlooked Benefits of Nutrient Reductions in the Mississippi River Basin

Abstract: Improvements in local surface water quality in the Mississippi River Basin (MRB) can contribute to the regional environmental goals of reducing hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico. To inform estimates of the benefits of water quality policy, we use a choice experiment survey in a typical subwatershed of the MRB to estimate willingness to pay for local environmental improvements and helping to reduce hypoxia far downstream. We find that residents place large values on reduced local algal blooms, improved local fish p… Show more

“…In this study, we apply the ITEEM to investigate watershed-scale portfolios of agricultural BMPs and EBTs via a case study in a typical Corn Belt watershed. The physical, biophysical, and chemical processes involved in the integrated model were validated by historical data (see refs , , , for more details); the economic parameters and relations are validated by Parthum and Ando . The ITEEM is coupled with a multiple-objective optimization program to illustrate the trade-offs and synergies among the food, energy, water, and environment systems and to explore solutions based on spatially explicit combinations of agricultural BMPs and EBTs.…”

“…Moreover, most hunters were familiar with the CWD testing fee, which was currently paid by TWRA, and the benefits of CWD testing. Although the WTP questions were presented as an advisory referendum, the consent form of the survey incorporated the following statement to increase hunter belief in consequentiality (Parthum and Ando, 2020;Vossler and Holladay, 2018): "You are one of the few randomly selected deer hunters in the region to participate in this survey. Your response will help TWRA, and other stakeholders understand hunters' perception of CWD risk and inform their management decisions."…”
