Overexpression of UDP-Glucose 4-Epimerase Is Associated with Differentiation Grade of Gastric Cancer

Abstract: The UDP-glucose 4-epimerase (GALE) is a glycosyltransferase, which acts on protein and lipid glycosylation in normal and neoplastic cells. This study is aimed at investigating the differential tissue expression of GALE and its possible association with clinical-pathological parameters and the outcome of gastric adenocarcinoma patients. Seventy-one patients were evaluated in relation to GALE expression by immunohistochemistry. Our results showed that 48 (67.6%) patients were GALE positive and 23 (32.4%) negativ… Show more

“…UDP-galactose-4-epimerase (GALE), a key enzyme of galactose metabolism,4,5 was overexpressed in some kinds of cancers, such as papillary thyroid carcinoma and glioblastoma [Sun et al, 2019]. Souza observed that GALE expression was associated with clinical-pathological parameters and the outcome of gastric adenocarcinoma patients [ de Souza et al, 2019]. These evidence suggested that GALE may be a diagnostic biomarker and a potential therapeutic target.…”

“…If more than 10% of tumor cells were stained in different degrees of intensity, expression was considered positive. According to De Souza et al [36], staining below 10% was denoted as negative. Cancer samples that presented a counterpart of normal tissue were studied and mucosa was described.…”
