Overexpression of the rFCA RNA Recognition Motif Affects Morphologies Modifications in Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Abstract: RNA recognition motifs as important regulators of gene expression are highly conserved in animals and plants. The FCA floral promotion gene in Arabidopsis encodes a protein, containing two RNA recognition motifs (RRM) and a WW protein interaction domain. Here we isolated FCA cDNA from rice. FCA in rice (rFCA) was homologous to FCA-gamma of Arabidopsis and contained conserved domains. To investigate the function of RRM domain, fragment RRM1 and RRM2 of rFCA were introduced into rice subspecies Oryza sativa L. s… Show more

“…It has been reported that when each of the two RRMs of the homologous gene of AtFCA in Oryza sativa (r FCA ) were introduced into rice, the flowering time was delayed, and both the seed size and cell size of the transgenic plants increased (Hong et al ). Since the RRM domains of OsRRMh and rFCA are similar (42% similarity, 27% identity), we generated plants overexpressing RRM1 and RRM2 individually and/or all of them together under the control of the constitutive 35S promoter to test the unique functions of each RRM domain.…”

“…Genotypes in cluster 1 varied before 1997 and conserved thereafter; genotypes in cluster 2 varied before 2004 and conserved thereafter; genotypes in cluster 3 conserved until 2005 and varied thereafter, and genotypes in cluster 4 varied all through the years from 1948 to 2011. To reveal selection preference underlying these patterns in different breeding periods, we checked reported genes on them29 and found that before 1997, genes related to flowering and sterility were preferentially selected, including OsMSH5 31, rFCA 32. From 1997 to 2004, genes related to blast resistance, including Pib 33, were preferentially selected.…”

“…The gene LOC_Os12g01190.1 codes for a general negative regulator of transcription-like protein, which are described in both rice and Arabidopsis and contain a RNA recognition motif (Lorkovic and Barta 2002;Hong et al 2007). Expression of this gene was highly down regulated in the tolerant variety CSR 27, slightly down regulated in MI 48 but up regulated in VSR 156 and CSR 11 (Fig.…”
