“…Our phylogenetic analysis clearly demonstrated that this gene is closely related to AtCYS-1, HvCPI-3, and OC-III within Cluster A of the four cystatin clusters (Tan et al 2014). Using a biochemical analysis with recombinant protein, we found that the proteinase activity of papain was inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner, similar to earlier research with cystatins isolated from Arabidopsis (Zhang et al 2008), barley (Gaddour et al 2001), and broccoli (Eason et al 2014). Under various abiotic stresses, MpCYS5 showed different expression patterns.…”

“…Among others, treatments with gaseous compounds (e.g. nitric oxide (NO), ozone, hydrogen sulphide), soluble substances with antioxidant properties, chlorine and calcium-based solutions, hot water, UV radiation, high pressure, modulations of light quality and photoperiod and, genetic manipulations are shown to suppress the wound-induced browning, delay senescence, stimulate the expression of defence genes or downregulate stress- and senescence-associated genes (Coupe et al 2003; Rico et al 2006; Eason et al 2014; Li et al 2014; Mahajan et al 2014; Iakimova and Woltering 2015; Woltering and Seifu 2015). Storage under modified (MA) or controlled atmosphere (CA) with low O 2 (< 3%) and increased CO 2 levels (up to 10–15%) is another technology for preventing the occurrence of browning syndrome and premature senescence.…”

“…Fluids from dying cells may leak into the intercellular spaces causing macroscopic signs of deterioration (e.g. brown, sunken or water soaked lesions, scald and tissue dismantlement) (Cantwell and Suslow 2002; Coupe et al 2003; Fernández-Trujillo and Martínez 2006; Saltveit and Choi 2007; Hurr et al 2010; Woltering and Iakimova 2010; Eason et al 2014; Iakimova and Woltering 2015; Cantre et al 2017). The understanding of the role of PCD in postharvest disorders is, however, still in its infancy.…”

“…BoCPI-1 significantly contributed to a delay in the yellowing of broccoli florets than did the suppression of BoCP5 (Eason et al, 2014). Many cystatins are strongly expressed upon exposure to abiotic stresses and the implication of the C1A CysProt-cystatin system has been reviewed (Martinez and Diaz, 2008;Martinez et al, 2012;DiazMendoza et al, 2014;Kidric et al, 2014).…”

“…Its ectopic expression in tobacco, soybean and Arabidopsis presumed a protective role towards the photosynthetic machinery during both natural and stress-induced senescence (Prins et al, 2008;Quain et al, 2014). Eason et al (2014) characterized the role of a protease inhibitor (BoCPI-1) in broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italic) during the regulation of protease activity along postharvest senescence.…”
