“…53,54 Third, among the known inhibitor of apoptosis proteins, BIRC5 has been reported to be overexpressed in ATL and the expression level correlated with a shorter survival of the patients. [55][56][57] Although BIRC5 has been a focal point of several studies related to HTLV-1 and ATL, it is important to note that our results make a significant and critical contribution. Several groups have reported a correlation between HTLV-1-infected cell death and decreased BIRC5 expression.…”

“…Several groups have reported a correlation between HTLV-1-infected cell death and decreased BIRC5 expression. Che et al 55 Sasaki et al 28 recently reported analysis of expression patterns of 12 000 genes in 8 acute ATL patients. Three genes including TSLC1/IGSF4, CAV1, and PGDS were overexpressed more than 30-fold in the uncultured ATL cells.…”

“…100 Survivin was found to be overexpressed also in ATL, and survivin mRNA levels were described to be a marker for clinical stages or minimal residual disease. 101,102 Accordingly, low levels of survivin were detected in chronic-type ATL, low to high levels in acute type and extremely high levels in ATL cell lines. 102 Interestingly, sodium arsenite caused downregulation of survivin at both the mRNA and protein levels, resulting in growth inhibition and apoptosis induction in ATL cells.…”

“…77,78 Sodium arsenite (NaAsO2) was shown to induce apoptosis by down-regulating survivin expression through the NF-kB pathway in ATL cell lines. 79 Therapeutic results of phase II trials for arsenic trioxide and IFN-a have been conducted in seven patients (four acute type, three lymphoma type) with relapsed/refractory ATL, 80 and although four patients showed an initial response (one CR and three PR), treatment was discontinued after a median of 22 days because of toxicity (three patients) or subsequent progression (four patients). The combination of arsenic trioxide and IFN-a is feasible and exhibits anti-leukemic effects in relapsed/ refractory ATL patients.…”
