Overexpression of Bone Morphogenetic Protein 10 in Myocardium Disrupts Cardiac Postnatal Hypertrophic Growth

Abstract: Postnatal cardiac hypertrophies have traditionally been classified into physiological or pathological hypertrophies. Both of them are induced by hemodynamic load. Cardiac postnatal hypertrophic growth is regarded as a part of the cardiac maturation process that is independent of the cardiac working load. However, the functional significance of this biological event has not been determined, mainly because of the difficulty in creating an experimental condition for testing the growth potential of functioning hea… Show more

“…[26] Our results using high frequency echocardiography for the measurement of shortening fraction are also consistent with other studies using similar techniques in different mouse models. [27], [28], [29], [30] The calculation of ejection fraction is also consistent with a recent study. [31] The additional capability of directly measuring percent ejection fraction in the 2D parasternal long axis allows high frequency echocardiography to be used alongside other newer imaging modalities such as 3D echo and MRI.…”

“…Among abundantly expressed genes in RA samples that are annotated as "developmental," BMP10 was observed. In mouse, Bmp10 has been shown to play an essential role both during cardiac development (3) and during postnatal hypertrophic growth (4). This gene belongs to the TGF-␤ family of growth factors.…”

“…Echocardiography was performed as previously described [35]. Two-dimensional short-axis images were obtained using a high resolution Vevo 770 Imaging System (Visualsonics Inc., Toronto, Canada) equipped with a 35 MHz probe.…”
