Overeating, caloric restriction and breast cancer risk by pathologic subtype: the EPIGEICAM study

Abstract: This study analyzes the association of excessive energy intake and caloric restriction with breast cancer (BC) risk taking into account the individual energy needs of Spanish women. We conducted a multicenter matched case-control study where 973 pairs completed lifestyle and food frequency questionnaires. Expected caloric intake was predicted from a linear regression model in controls, including calories consumed as dependent variable, basal metabolic rate as an offset and physical activity as explanatory. Ove… Show more

“…These changes result in a positive energy balance—the state in which energy intake exceeds energy expenditure—which, over time, can lead to obesity. Several studies have shown that reducing caloric intake and increasing physical activity may be protective against both pre- and post-menopausal breast cancer (38, 39). As such, targeting modifiable risk factors of obesity such as diet and physical activity is one strategy to reduce breast cancer risk and improve survival.…”

“…All this evidence leads researchers to investigate the epigenetic modifications and beneficial effects induced by dietary restriction and physical exercise in women and BC patients to assess the reduction of BC risk, the decrease of BC recurrence, and the therapeutic potential of food administration [5,36,37]. However, no convincing data have been generated on this topic and no epigenetic biomarkers predictive of the therapeutic efficacy and patient prognosis have been identified as yet.…”
