Bauhinia scandens has potential importance as an ornamental and medicinal plant. Researchers have isolated and identified 1-O-alkylglycerol in the leaves of the B. scandens plant, and established antitumor properties using the Brine Shrimp toxicity test, an internationally accepted bioassay. Although this species has high potential, little is known about the viability of seedling production and the morphology of these plants, particularly in terms of seed characteristics and initial stages of germination. The objective of this study was to characterize the seed morphology, germination, and seedlings of B. scandens. Seed water content, weight, and coloration were evaluated. This study also included a description of seed biometrics, external and internal structures, germination, and seedling morphology. Internal seed morphology was evaluated by the anatomical sectioning and X-ray methods. The morphology data obtained were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis and germination data were determined using Cramér’s V. B. scandens seeds have a coloration ranging from very dark grayish-red to dark reddish-brown, flat oblong shapes, and rounded bases and apexes with full or slightly undulating margins. Healthy seedlings are produced mainly by seeds with well-formed internal structures. The reddish petiole of the seedling leaves is a taxonomic character for B. scandens identification. The non-domestication and genetic variability of this species reflect on the seed and seedling color and size variation.

“…In summary, Bauhinia scandens is liana with ornamental value; the stem forms into a 'monkey ladder' when older; the fruits are pea shaped with 1 to 2 seeds. Apart from Jeromini et al (2020) who studied optimal growing medium for growing Bauhinia scandens seedlings and Jeromini et al (2021) who reported the methods to overcome seed dormancy, very limited studies have been conducted on propagation and culture of this species.According to previous phytochemical screening, the ethanolic extract of its leaves contained some phytochemicals such as phenols, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, alkaloids and steroids which are widely known to have strong relation with medicinal anti-oxidant properties (Lianah et al, 2021). Recently, much attention has been focused on the exploration of the ethnomedicine containing the antioxidant property for limiting the harmful effects of excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in the body. Bauhinia scandens has been reported to exert antioxidant property however which part of the plant has not been fully elucidated yet. The study aimed to investigate the antioxidant activity of Bauhinia scandens especially in the bark and leaf parts. The antioxidant activity of this plant was measured using 1,1-diphenyl- 2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay method. The inhibitory concentration 50 (IC50) of each sample was calculated to show the antioxidant activity. The IC50 value of Bauhinia scandens barks and leaves ethanolic extract were 34.77 Âµg/ml and 113.50 Âµg/ml respectively and standard ascorbic acid (as positive control) IC50 was 79.57 Âµg/ml. To our knowledge, this is the first study to show Bauhinia scandens barks ethanolic extract exerts higher antioxidant activity compared to ascorbic acid. This activity may relate to the specific Phytochemicals in Bauhinia scandens.

Seed quality is routinely assessed by direct tests, e.g, the germination test, or indirect tests like the tetrazolium test, which has shoown to be promising in the determine viability and vigor, allowing the diagnosis of the main problems that may affect seed quality, such as mechanic damages, field deterioration and storage. In this respect, this study was conducted to develop a tetrazolium test protocol to evaluate the viability and vigor of Tamarindus indica L. seeds. Before exposing the seeds to the tetrazolium solution, seed preconditioning studies were carried out in which seven soaking times were tested. The soaking time that did not cause damage to the seed embryo and allowed the removal of the seed coat to expose the seed structures to the tetrazolium salt was selected. Then, an experiment was set up in a completely randomized design with a 2x3x3 factorial arrangement involving two seed lots, three soaking times in tetrazolium salt (6, 12 and 16 h) and three salt concentrations (0.075, 0.1 and 0.5%), totaling 18 treatments with four replicates of 25 seeds, evaluated at 40 ºC. For each treatment, the seeds were divided into three classes, namely, viable and vigorous embryos (class 1); viable embryos (class 2) and non-viable or dead embryos (class 3). For a comparison with the tetrazolium test results, the two seed lots were analyzed for water content, germination, emergence, first count, germination speed index, emergence speed index, growth and seedling dry weight. The viability and vigor of T. indica seeds can be evaluated after a soaking period of 48 h and immersion for 6h in tetrazolium salt at the concentration of 0.1%, at 40°C, with provides results similar to conventional seed viability tests. The tetrazolium test proved to be adequate to differentiate T. indica seed lots in terms of viability.
