Overcome Cancer Cell Drug Resistance Using Natural Products

Abstract: Chemotherapy is one of the major treatment methods for cancer. However, failure in chemotherapy is not uncommon, mainly due to dose-limiting toxicity associated with drug resistance. Management of drug resistance is important towards successful chemotherapy. There are many reports in the Chinese literature that natural products can overcome cancer cell drug resistance, which deserve sharing with scientific and industrial communities. We summarized the reports into four categories: (1) in vitro studies using ce… Show more

“…In particular, the complexity of potential drug−phytochemical interaction is largely unexplored. Numerous phytochemicals were shown to sensitize cancer cells to anticancer drugs or overcome anticancer drug resistance (Baharuddin et al, ; P. Wang, Yang, Yang, Wang, & Lee, ; Zhang et al, ). However, phytochemicals could also promote cell proliferation of cancer cells under certain circumstances (Liu et al, ; Yesil‐Celiktas, Sevimli, Bedir, & Vardar‐Sukan, ).…”

“…Therefore, combination therapy has become a common approach in clinical practice to address MDR issues [10] . Discovery of natural compounds to overcome MDR cancers has attracted much attention; in particular, active ingredients from Chinese medicine have been widely investigated for their effects on reversing MDR [11] . Their combination with conventional chemotherapeutics represents a promising strategy for anti-MDR cancer therapies.…”

“…The ability of these compounds in restoring the drug sensitivity in MDR cancer cells is proved by the inhibitory effects on the P‐gp‐, MRP1‐, and ABCG2‐mediated efflux. In general, natural product modulators of MDR are substrates for ABC transporters and compete with anticancer agents for binding to the active site of transporters and reduce drug efflux (Figure ) …”
