Overall Survival Rate of Vietnamese Patients with Colorectal Cancer: A Hospital-Based Cohort Study in the Central Region of Vietnam

Abstract: Background: This study investigated the overall survival (OS) at 1-year, 3-years, and 5-years after colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnosis and examined the prognostic factors of mortality among patients with CRC in Vietnam's central region. Methods: This ambidirectional cohort study included patients newly diagnosed with CRC at a tertiary hospital in Vietnam's central region between 2013 and 2019. Survival duration was calculated from the surgery date or the first day of CRC-specific treatment until the date of dea… Show more

“…However, for stage ‐III patients MS we found was 19 months, which is lower than a report from Nigeria, MS for stage‐III is 24 months, due to curative treatment delivery being relatively better in such locally advanced cases 31 . In comparison to the survival rate of Vietnamese patients, the MS time was 48.59 months (39.34–57.93 months) 34 . This stark disparity resulted from varying stage distribution and type of treatment delivery.…”

“…Our finding is far lower than many other studies performed in different parts of the world, such as a study from Brazil, where the 5‐year OS was 63.5% and 60.6% for colonic and rectal malignancies, respectively, 33 and a Chinese study where the 3‐ and 5‐year OS was 74% and 68%, respectively 26 . In a study in Vietnam, the 1, 3, and 5 OS survival showed 84.7%, 56%, and 45%, respectively, 34 which are greater than 1‐year survival of our patients and this demonstrates the need of addressing the situation, which necessitates the involvement of all stakeholders.…”

“…Together with the rising incidence of CRC, the 5-year survival rate of Vietnamese patients was reported at only 45.0% (2), lower than that in other countries (3,4). A major cause of cancer death is metastatic recurrence, potentially due to residual cancer cells remaining after curative-intent treatment including surgery and adjuvant therapies.…”

“…CRC is the third most diagnosed malignancy in recent years and the second leading cause of cancer death globally ( 3 5 ). The GLOBOCAN report in 2020 has estimated that there would be 1,931,590 million new CRC cases worldwide (10% of all cancer diagnoses) and 935,173 million CRC-related deaths at 9.4% of all cancer-related fatalities ( 6 ). Therefore, if no crucial measures are taken to reverse the trend, the global number of new CRC cases will reach 3.2 million by 2040 ( 7 ).…”
