Nature has always been an example of perfection and inspiration. In nature, everything has reasons why it is happening exactly the way it does. Nature-inspired optimization algorithms have become a rapidly growing area of research in all areas of life. Ant colonies find the shortest path to food, the evolution of the living world shows adaptation to the world around it. For example, bees find the optimal path to food and back to the hive. Optimization algorithms contribute significantly to solving many complex issues and achieving optimal results. This research paper outlines nature-inspired optimization algorithms, such as ant colonies, artificial immune system s, artificial neural networks, flocks of bats, bee swarms, firefly algorithms, genetic algorithms, and particle swarms. The purpose of this brief overview is to provide an easy-to-understand list of the basic features of the most common nature-inspired optimization algorithms as well as the potential applications of the aforementioned algorithms in civil engineering.

The present study develops a more efficient method for the accurate modeling of nonlinear behavior of structural elements, being an essential ingredient in reliable assessment of collapse fragility curve, as an important issue in the performance‐based earthquake engineering. To this end, beams and columns are often simulated by lumped plasticity models, consisting of one elastic element and two nonlinear spring elements at two ends to consider the effects of strength and stiffness degradation. Since introducing spring elements is obviously associated with the correct estimation of axial load ratio of each structural component during nonlinear dynamic analysis, the specific aim of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of any variation in the generated axial forces (axial efforts) in the elements on structural seismic response. For this purpose, fuzzy set theory has been utilized to assess the median of collapse fragility curves as fuzzy number by well‐known α‐cut approach. Then, herein, genetic algorithm has been employed to search for the maximum and minimum of this median in each membership degree α. Application of this methodology is illustrated through an example. It is shown that the primary advantage of the proposed assessment processes is to incorporate the influence of record to record variability, as aleatory uncertainty, and fuzziness in axial effort of the structural elements, as epistemic uncertainty, on the estimation of more realistic responses for structural systems with cyclic behavior and the evaluation of collapse performance of reinforced concrete buildings under seismic loads.

Optimalizacija oblika lučnih mostova s otvorenim nadlučnim sklopom U ovom se radu analizira lučni most s otvorenim nadlučnim sklopom. Računalni kod je izveden za izradu modela na temelju geometrijskih podataka, a radi rješavanja problema optimalizacije. U ovom se radu provodi postupak optimalnog projektiranja, a ukupan obujam materijala ugrađenog u donji ustroj mosta usvaja se kao objektivna funkcija. Donji ustroj sadrži stup i armiranobetonski luk. Na kraju je proveden i postupak optimalizacije pomoću algoritma za istovremeno stohastičko predviđanje poremećaja. An open spandrel arch bridge is analysed in this paper. A computer code is written to create a model from geometrical data, so as to solve the optimisation problem. An optimum design procedure is conducted in the paper, and the total material volume of the bridge substructure is adopted as an objective function. The substructure includes the column and the reinforced-concrete arch. Finally, the optimization technique is implemented using the Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation algorithm.
